Henry Awards\u00a0<\/em><span>and\u00a0<\/span><em>Best American Short Stories.\u00a0<\/em><span>She has written two collections of stories,\u00a0<\/span><em>The Family Markowitz\u00a0<\/em><span>and\u00a0<\/span><em>Total Immersion\u00a0<\/em><span>and a novel for younger readers,\u00a0<\/span><em>The Other Side of the Island.\u00a0<\/em><span>Her essays and reviews have appeared in\u00a0<\/span><em>The New York Times Book Review, The Wall Street Journal, The New Republic,<\/em><span>\u00a0<\/span><em>The Washington Post,<\/em><span>\u00a0<\/span><em>The Boston Globe,\u00a0<\/em><span>and\u00a0<\/span><em>The American Scholar.\u00a0<\/em><span>Raised in Honolulu, Goodman studied English and philosophy at Harvard and received a PhD in English literature from Stanford. She is the recipient of a Whiting Writer\u2019s Award, the Salon Award for Fiction, and fellowships from MacDowell and the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced study.
