Born in China in 1956,\u00a0<\/span><span>Xuefei<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><span>Jin<\/span><span>\u00a0(Ha\u00a0<\/span><span>Jin<\/span><span>\u00a0is his pen name) was a teenager when China entered the Cultural Revolution. He became a member of the People\u2019s Liberation Army at the age of fourteen. His novel\u202f<\/span><\/span><em><span lang=\"en-US\">Waiting<\/span><\/em><span lang=\"en-US\"><span>, which won him the National Book Award in 1999, and the PEN\/ Faulkner in 2000, was based on his experiences during his five-year service in the Red Army. He was awarded the PEN\/ Faulkner again in 2005 for\u202f<\/span><\/span><em><span lang=\"en-US\">War Trash<\/span><\/em><span lang=\"en-US\"><span>. <\/span><span>To date, he has published nine novels, four collections of short stories, four volumes of poetry, a book of essays, and a biography of Li Bai.\u00a0 His most\u00a0<\/span><span>recent book is\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"><span><em>A Song Everlasting<\/em>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"><span>(2021)<\/span><span>.<\/span><span> <\/span><span>His work has been translated into more than thirty languages.<\/span><\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span lang=\"en-US\"><span>Ha\u00a0<\/span><span>Jin<\/span><span>\u00a0earned his\u00a0<\/span><span>Master\u2019s<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><span>d<\/span><span>egree at Shandong University in China, and in 1986 came to the United States to begin his doctoral work at Brandeis. He was accepted into Boston University\u2019s Creative Writing Program in 1991 and completed his studies in 199<\/span><span>3<\/span><span>. Though a native of China, he has done his writing in English.<\/span><\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><span lang=\"en-US\"><span>In addition to the National Book award, Ha\u00a0<\/span><span>Jin<\/span><span>\u00a0received the Pen\/Hemingway award for his first collection of short stories,<em>\u202f<\/em><\/span><\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"><span><em>Ocean of Words<\/em>\u202f<\/span><\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"><span>(1996), the Flannery O\u2019Connor prize for his second,\u202f<\/span><\/span><em><span lang=\"en-US\">Under the Red Flag<\/span><\/em><span lang=\"en-US\"><span>\u202f(1997)<\/span><span>,\u00a0<\/span><span>the Asian American Literary Award for\u00a0<\/span><span>his story collection\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"><span><em>The Bridegroom<\/em>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"><span>(20<\/span><span>0<\/span><span>0),\u00a0<\/span><span>the PEN\/Oakland Josephine Miles\u00a0<\/span><span>Literary Award for\u00a0<\/span><\/span><em><span lang=\"en-US\">A Distant Center<\/span><\/em><span lang=\"en-US\"><span>\u00a0(poetry, 2019)<\/span><span>, and the\u00a0<\/span><span>Bucheon<\/span><span>\u00a0Diaspora Literary\u00a0<\/span><span>Award (2021) for\u00a0<\/span><\/span><em><span lang=\"en-US\">A\u00a0Free Life<\/span><\/em><span lang=\"en-US\"><span>\u00a0(2007).<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><span>\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p lang=\"en-US\"><span lang=\"en-US\"><span>In 2005 he was elected a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.\u202f<\/span><span>He was also elected a member of American Academy of Arts and Letters in 2014. <\/span><span>Before returning to Boston University,\u00a0<\/span><span>Jin<\/span><span>\u00a0had taught poetry, fiction writing, and English Literature at Emory University.<\/span><\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"author":20263,"template":"","_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/creativewriting\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/profile\/3399"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/creativewriting\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/profile"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/creativewriting\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/profile"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/creativewriting\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/20263"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/creativewriting\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/profile\/3399\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":3400,"href":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/creativewriting\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/profile\/3399\/revisions\/3400"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/creativewriting\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=3399"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
