{"id":3725,"date":"2016-12-05T14:28:19","date_gmt":"2016-12-05T19:28:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cpt\/?page_id=3725"},"modified":"2026-05-06T07:42:45","modified_gmt":"2026-05-06T11:42:45","slug":"past-projects-2","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cpt\/current-projects-2\/past-projects-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Past Projects"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Please visit the following links to read more about former\u00a0CPT projects:<\/span><\/h3>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cpt\/current-projects-2\/past-projects-2\/homiletical-theology-project\/\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Homiletical Theology Project<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/cpt\/files\/2026\/03\/Homiletical-theology-project-1-e1556662507801-1-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-6135 size-thumbnail\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cpt\/files\/2026\/03\/Homiletical-theology-project-1-e1556662507801-1-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cpt\/files\/2026\/03\/Homiletical-theology-project-1-e1556662507801-1-100x100.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Homiletical Theology sees its theological task in relation to the practices and theories that serve the preaching of the gospel in contexts, cultures, and situations.\u00a0 It understands homiletics and the practice of preaching not as an application of theology, but as a site for\u00a0<\/span><i>doing<\/i><span>\u00a0theology.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cpt\/?p=3062\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Sustaining Urban Pastoral Excellence<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/cpt\/files\/2016\/12\/2007-final-conference-100-400x300-400x300.jpg\" alt=\"2007-final-conference-100-400x300\" width=\"224\" height=\"168\" class=\" wp-image-3726 alignleft\" \/>The SUPE project originally ran from 2003-2007 and offered urban pastors across the nation an opportunity to sustain excellent ministry by strengthening practices of spiritual renewal, urban study and reflection, and peer community through (a) forming partnerships of four pastors each within their particular urban contexts; (b) defining and studying together a question, problem, or issue related to urban pastoral ministry; and (c) participating together in a six-month program of study, reflection, and spiritual renewal that including meeting for two hours every other week. The co-principal investigators were\u00a0Dr. Bryan Stone and Dr. Claire Wolfteich.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><\/h4>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Faculty Research Grants:<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/cpt\/files\/2016\/12\/09_1682_STHVIEWS_057-450x300-450x300-450x300.jpg\" alt=\"09_1682_sthviews_057-450x300-450x300\" width=\"222\" height=\"148\" class=\"wp-image-3727 alignright\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">By building upon the various connections that individual faculty and projects have established with local congregations, denominational offices, and religious centers, the Center for Practical Theology aimed to conserve and expand these important relationships so that they may be more integrally incorporated into\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">the teaching and research of the faculty as a whole.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cpt\/past-projects\/past-projects-2\/clergy-and-clinician-interface-project\/\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Clergy and Clinician Interface Project<\/strong><\/span><\/a><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This project would allow for the application of previous studies by examining the manner in which a minister\u2019s psychological well-being affects his\/her theological perspective and vice versa. Dr. James P. Burns was the project P.I.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cpt\/?p=48\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Exploring Interdisciplinary Paradigms for Theological Education: Preaching and Theology from a Womanist Perspective<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This\u00a0project introduced students and the Boston University School of Theology community to an interdisciplinary theological method and perspective that reflects the discipline of practical theology. Dr. Shelly Rambo and Dr. Dale Andrews were the project co-principal investigators.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cpt\/past-projects\/feminist-and-womanist-practical-theology\/\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Feminist and Womanist Practical Theology\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/a><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The Feminist and Womanist Practical Theology project sponsored a series of seminars and lectures featuring: research in developmental stages; new publications; and special interest forums on such themes as teaching and culture-crossing. The co-principal investigators were Dr. Courtney Goto, Dr. Pamela Lightsey, Dean Mary Elizabeth Moore, and Dr. Shelly Rambo.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cpt\/?p=41\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Field Education Programs in the Korean Context<\/strong><\/a><\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The goal of this proposal is to provide the needed research to establish a Field Education program that re-evaluates and integrates both Korean and Euro-American theological, pedagogical, and methodological systems. The co-principal investigators were Rev. Dr. Hee An Choi and Rev.\u00a0Samuel M. Johnson.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cpt\/?p=22\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Moderate Christians with Liberal and Evangelical Instincts<\/strong><\/a><\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This project involves creating a web-based method for investigating how best to support the faith and learning of moderate Christians with both liberal and evangelical instincts. The\u00a0Principal Co-Investigators were Rev. Dr. Wesley J. Wildman and Rev. Dr. S. Chapin Garner.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cpt\/?p=37\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Missiology as a Practical Theological Discipline<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A new era of engagement of the Christian church with the world seems to be emerging.\u00a0The fundamental question this raises for us as scholars is how to make the past experience of the church with the world speak to the current situation. The\u00a0Principal Co-Investigators were Dr. Dana Robert and Dr. Nancy Ammerman.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cpt\/?p=43\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Parish Transitions Archive<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This project developed an archive of the lived experience of people of faith during one historical moment of major, if not cataclysmic, congregational change. The\u00a0Principal Investigator: Dr. Brian McCorkle, the\u00a0Co-Investigators: Dr. Nancy Ammerman and Dr. Shelly Rambo<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cpt\/?p=45\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Relating Pastoral and Prophetic Ministry in Congregational Life and Theological Ethics<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This project was designed to introduce students at the Boston University School of Theology community to various models sustaining an important dialectic between pastoral and prophetic ministry, and how those models are vital to the life of our congregations. The\u00a0Co-Principal Investigators were Dr. Dale P. Andrews and Dr. Norman Faramelli.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cpt\/?p=39\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Religiosity and Health Related Risks in Adolescence<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">One of the greatest challenges presently facing churches and other religious communities is how to address the increasing number of adolescents and youths who engage in risky behavior, especially in regard to health.\u00a0 Can congregations mitigate this risky behavior for their own youth, and for those in the neighborhood? The principal co-investigators were Dr. Bob Neville and Dr. James Burns.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cpt\/?p=20\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Theologizing in the Aftermath<\/a><\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This project aims to develop resources for religious leaders who are confronting situations of trauma.
