{"id":52,"date":"2019-10-11T11:21:43","date_gmt":"2019-10-11T15:21:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/core\/?page_id=52"},"modified":"2025-10-21T09:57:59","modified_gmt":"2025-10-21T13:57:59","slug":"abroad","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/core\/abroad\/","title":{"rendered":"Study &#038; Travel Programs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>At different points in their Core career, students have the chance to bring their studies out of the classroom and into the world through distinctive learning and travel programs.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Spring Break Program in London, UK<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><em><strong>\u201cI wander thro&#8217; each charter&#8217;d street,<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/em><em><strong>Near where the charter&#8217;d Thames does flow&#8230;\u201d<br \/>\n\u2014William Blake<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Core will take students to London, UK during Spring Break, March 7-14, 2026 for an experiential learning trip with Professors Walsh and Gapotchenko. The London Spring Break trip is an exciting way to experience a city that has long been central to the global imagination, and that affords access to some of the world\u2019s richest collections of art and artifacts, and to some of the most important sites related to authors and thinkers that feature in the Core Curriculum.\u00a0 Designed as a capstone to the work done in several Core courses, but especially the second-year Humanities sequence, we will complement our studies of the Parthenon, the Roman Empire, Shakespeare, Rembrandt, Milton, Shelley, Austen, DuBois and others with visits to relevant London sites and experiences, with possible destinations including Roman ruins, the British Museum, the Globe Theatre, the Tower of London, the National Gallery, and day trip to the Jane Austen House, along with other activities. Through critical engagement with these spaces, students will learn about the legacies of London as a culture capital, and as the metropole of a global empire. Two Core professors will join students to encounter cultural works that are in conversation with our course. The cost is subsidized through the Stephen Cohen Sublime Firsts Fund. This inquiry-based study trip gives priority to students enrolled in CC 101; application instructions are below. Complementing our studies of Dante, Petrarch, Michelangelo, Machiavelli and many other figures of the Italian Renaissance, students will visit the Uffizi, the Galileo Museum, the Santa Croce, the Accademia, among others; students will also learn about the legacy of the Medici family in the city and learn about the family\u2019s archives from a lecture at the<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.medici.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Medici Archive Project<\/a>; <span>we will also take a day trip to explore another city. Chaperones, docents and other local experts will guide you along a culture-packed itinerary, but free time is also built into the schedule for you to explore and discover the city on your own. Students take classes from both BU professors and professors from the American College of Greece, and study classical history and culture while immersing themselves in the contemporary Greek world. Coursework is complemented with day trips to locations such as Delphi, Mycenae, Corinth, Nauplion, Poros, and of course the Acropolis. Since the inception of the Greece summer program in 2013, the cost to students has been heavily subsidized by scholarships funded through donations from the BU Philhellenes, alumni, and other patrons.
