{"id":811,"date":"2025-09-09T14:15:19","date_gmt":"2025-09-09T18:15:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/comtech\/?page_id=811"},"modified":"2025-09-09T14:15:19","modified_gmt":"2025-09-09T18:15:19","slug":"vmware-horizon-client","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/comtech\/technology-services\/help\/com-information-technology\/vmware-horizon-client\/","title":{"rendered":"VMWare Horizon Client"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>CAS Information Technology hosts a virtual desktop for COM students who are taking FT 508 &#8211; Line Producing which provides access to specialized software.&nbsp; Connections to this virtual desktop are made using the VMware Horizon Client.&nbsp; Full instructions on how to install VMware Horizon and connect to the virtual desktop are available on the CAS IT page here &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/casit\/information\/vdi-virtual-desktops\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/casit\/information\/vdi-virtual-desktops\/<\/a> .<\/p>\n\n\n<aside class=\"callout-square bg-blue col-sm-full\"><div class=\"callout-content\"><h3 class=\"callout-title\">IMPORTANT - Files are NOT saved on the Virtual Desktop<\/h3><p>\nAny files that are saved on the virtual desktop are deleted when you log off.&nbsp; Save files to the cloud (Google Drive, email) using a web browser on the virtual desktop or see the instructions below on how to access folders on your local machine from the virtual desktop.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/aside>\n\n\n\n<h2>Sharing Local Files with the Virtual Desktop<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The VMware Horizon Client will ask if you want to enable file sharing between your local machine and the virtual desktop when you first run the program. If you clicked to enable this feature, your local user folder and\/or USB drive will show up on the virtual desktop as a Network Drive under &#8220;My PC&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you do not see your local machine user folder listed under Network Locations, you must enable folder sharing in the VMware Horizon Client settings.&nbsp; See the instructions below for both MAC and Windows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>Enable Folder Sharing on MAC<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol><li>If off campus, first connect to the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/tech\/services\/cccs\/remote\/vpn\/use\/\" target=\"_blank\">BU VPN<\/a> then open the VMware Horizon Client<\/li><li>If Auto Connect is enabled and you are prompted to log in, click <strong>Cancel<\/strong><br><\/li><li>In the top menu bar, click <strong>VMware Horizon Client<\/strong> and then <strong>Preferences<\/strong><br><\/li><li>Click the <strong>Sharing<\/strong> tab and then check the box for <strong>Allow access to <\/strong><em><strong>username<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/em>and\/or <strong>Allow access to removable storage<\/strong> (USB drives).&nbsp; Your local user folder should appear under the folder list.<br><\/li><li>Close the window and double click the <strong>casvdi2.bu.edu<\/strong> icon to connect to the virtual desktop.&nbsp; Your local user folder and\/or USB drives should appear on the virtual desktop under <strong>My PC<\/strong> &#8211; <strong>Network Locations<\/strong><br><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3>Enable Folder Sharing on Windows<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol><li>If off campus, first connect to the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/tech\/services\/cccs\/remote\/vpn\/use\/\" target=\"_blank\">BU VPN<\/a> then open the VMware Horizon Client<\/li><li>Double click the<strong> casvdi2.bu.edu<\/strong> icon and login with your BU credentials<\/li><li>If the COM VM is set to connect automatically and you go right into the remote windows desktop, click the <strong>Options<\/strong> button in the top menu bar and uncheck <strong>Autoconnect to This Desktop.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/strong>Log off and then follow these steps again to login and display the VM select screen with COM listed.<br><\/li><li>On the virtual machine selection screen, click the <strong>gear icon<\/strong> in the top right to access the settings<br><\/li><li>Click the <strong>Sharing<\/strong> tab and then check the box for <strong>Share your local files <\/strong><em><strong>username<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/em>and\/or <strong>Allow access to removable storage<\/strong> (USB drives).&nbsp; Your local user folder should appear under the folder list.<br><\/li><li>Close the window and double click the <strong>casvdi2.bu.edu<\/strong> icon to connect to the virtual desktop.&nbsp; Your local user folder and\/or USB drives should appear on the virtual desktop under <strong>My PC<\/strong> &#8211; <strong>Network Locations<\/strong><br><\/li><\/ol>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>CAS Information Technology hosts a virtual desktop for COM students who are taking FT 508 &#8211; Line Producing which provides&hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":22657,"featured_media":0,"parent":246,"menu_order":5,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","template":"","meta":{"_bu_prepress_primary_term":"","_bu_prepress_primary_term_manual":""},"bu-publication":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/comtech\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/pages\/811"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/comtech\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/pages"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/comtech\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/page"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/comtech\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/22657"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/comtech\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=811"}],"version-history":[{"count":2,"href":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/comtech\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/pages\/811\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":905,"href":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/comtech\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/pages\/811\/revisions\/905"}],"up":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/comtech\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/pages\/246"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/comtech\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=811"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"bu-publication","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/comtech\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/bu-publication?post=811"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
