{"id":293,"date":"2015-06-24T15:11:29","date_gmt":"2015-06-24T19:11:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/compliance\/?page_id=293"},"modified":"2025-08-07T17:18:36","modified_gmt":"2025-08-07T21:18:36","slug":"about-us","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/compliance\/about-us\/","title":{"rendered":"About Us"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>About the Compliance Services Office<\/strong><\/span><\/h1>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2>Mission Statement<\/h2>\n<p>The Compliance Services Office coordinates the University\u2019s efforts to meet compliance obligations efficiently and effectively and fosters ethical behavior and a culture of integrity through reinforcement of Boston University\u2019s Code of Ethical Conduct and Conflict of Interest Policy.<\/p>\n<p>We fulfill this mission by:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Supporting departments with a primary responsibility for compliance, and assisting the University\u2019s Compliance Area and Operational owners with monitoring, identifying, and understanding new and existing compliance obligations.<\/li>\n<li>Providing safe, confidential, and effective mechanisms for asking questions and reporting about compliance and ethics issues.<\/li>\n<li>Collaborating with offices across the university to ensure that \u00a0compliance matters are resolved in a manner that uphold community standards of integrity and ethical behavior.<\/li>\n<li>Promoting and facilitating the University\u2019s confidential Ethics and Compliance Hotline, and assisting the Compliance Committee with oversight of case investigations and outcomes.<\/li>\n<li>Enabling access to the University\u2019s Policies and Procedures through management of a central Policies webpage.<\/li>\n<li>Providing advice to the Boston University community on compliance and ethics issues.<\/li>\n<li>Assisting with the development and implementation of the University\u2019s compliance training and education efforts.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In furtherance of our mission and activities, the Compliance Services Office endeavors to be knowledgeable, responsive, and ethical.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Compliance Services Office Activities<\/h2>\n<p>Compliance Services is a resource for the entire Boston University community. The Compliance Services Office supports the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/compliance\/compliance-matrix-public\/\">departments with primary responsibility<\/a>\u00a0for compliance and coordinates the University\u2019s efforts to meet these obligations efficiently and effectively. Additionally promotes training and professional development of individuals on campus who have compliance responsibilities, and assists in assessing training gaps, and makes recommendations for future trainings. The projects can change year-over-year. The projects that CSO has remained consistently involved with for the past several years includes the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Protection of Minors: Contributes to working group that manages the Protection of Minors Program, delivers trainings, answers questions, and provides programs with information and resources to facilitate compliance with the Protection of Minors Policy through a centralized <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/protection-of-minors\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Protection of Minors<\/a> website.<\/li>\n<li>Privacy: Coordinate Privacy efforts by co-leading a Privacy Coordinating Committee and maintaining a centralized <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/privacy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Privacy resource website<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Drug Free Schools and Communities Act: Prepare the Biennial Drug and Alcohol Review Report.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h1>Compliance Services Office Assistance<\/h1>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">We work with compliance partners across the University to clarify obligations; coordinate compliance activities; support training and other educational efforts; investigate compliance concerns and identify, assess and mitigate risks. To that end, we offer a number of services to help assess and address compliance issues, including:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">&#8211;\u00a0 Table top exercises:\u00a0 Guided discussion of simulated hypothetical scenarios to clarify roles and responsibilities for responding to incidents.<br \/>\n&#8211;\u00a0 Risk assessments:\u00a0 Discussion with key stakeholders to identify potential compliance gaps of concern and assess the risks presented by those gaps.<br \/>\n&#8211;\u00a0 After action reviews:\u00a0 Structured review or de-brief process to assess a recent incident, focusing on identifying what went well and what could be improved in responding to a similar<br \/>\nincident in the future.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">The Compliance Services Office\u00a0partners include the Office of the General Counsel, Internal Audit and Advisory Services,\u00a0 the Director of Health Privacy and Compliance, Research Compliance, Information Security within IS&amp;T, and the Associate Director of Enterprise Risk Management and Planning. The Compliance Services Office (CSO) is a resource for the entire Boston University community that works with compliance partners across the institution to clarify obligations, coordinate compliance activities, support training and other educational efforts, investigate compliance concerns and identify, assess and mitigate risks.\u00a0 In her role, Nedra provides leadership and guidance in support of the University\u2019s compliance efforts. As AVP for Compliance Services, Nedra is responsible for carrying out all of the office\u2019s responsibilities as described above on this webpage, including CSO&#8217;s core functions of Hotline facilitation, conflict of interest oversight, and management of the Policies website. CSO reports up to the General Counsel and the Board of Trustees Audit Committee.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-family: inherit; font-size: inherit;\">Prior to BU, Nedra facilitated compliance efforts for the State University of New York (SUNY) System Administration, where she served as the Director of Compliance and Ethics. Nedra\u2019s duties at SUNY were to establish, coordinate, and maintain a University-wide Compliance function to serve the SUNY system of campuses, act as a central resource for individual campus compliance efforts, maintain the system-wide policy website, and help with training efforts. Nedra also served as the System-wide Ethics Officer and System-wide Records Management Officer. Prior to SUNY, Nedra worked for over seven years in higher education administration at the University of Connecticut School of Law. Samantha supports the Associate Vice President for Compliance Services with furthering the University\u2019s Compliance Program and administering CSO\u2019s core functions, projects, and initiatives in furtherance of its mission. Examples include assisting with investigations, monitoring for new laws and regulations and facilitating University efforts to comply with new obligations, and coordinating with offices around the university to follow up on reports received through CSO.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Samantha has worked for Boston University since 2009. Prior to joining the Compliance Services Office, she was Senior Director of the Office of University Faculty Governance. Samantha is a graduate of Boston University and the University of Toronto.
