From oral health to literacy, we\u2019ve got our eyes on, and our hearts in, the future of this city and the families that have kept it vibrant and strong.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.horizonsforhomelesschildren.org\"><strong>Horizons for Homeless Children<\/strong><\/a> program, volunteers from BU\u2019s School of Dental Medicine provide oral health education and treatments to homeless children under six in Boston.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Our <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/today\/2011\/athletes-books-holiday-cheer\/\"><strong>Holiday Reading Program<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0expands children\u2019s horizons via literature. Since its inception in 1988, the program has grown to include hundreds of the University\u2019s varsity and club athletes visiting public schools around Boston. Athletes read aloud and discuss passages, providing the chance for kids to improve their reading skills as well as find positive role models.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>BU&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/seo\/students\/build\/\"><strong>BUILD<\/strong><\/a> program\u00a0pairs Terrier tutors with young public school students across Boston to foster literacy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Driven by the physicians and students on our Medical Campus, we serve the elderly in the greater community and their particular and unique needs, from simple companionship to Alzheimer\u2019s support.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Through\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bmc.org\/geriatrics.htm\"><strong>Boston University Geriatric Services<\/strong><\/a>, physicians and medical students provide an array of health services for Boston&#8217;s elderly, including in-home care, making over 5,000 home visits to 800 elders each year.<span class=\"phone-number\">617-414-4639<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/alzresearch\/education-program\/professional-training\/\"><strong>PAIRS<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0program gives\u00a0local patients with early-stage Alzheimer\u2019s and cognitive impairments the opportunity to interact and engage with medical students for a year, fostering better understanding of care and support issues.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Boston\u2019s most vulnerable citizens are BU\u2019s most valuable\u00a0citizens, and that\u2019s a feeling shared by\u00a0our administrators, faculty, staff, and\u00a0students.
