{"id":1701,"date":"2015-08-18T14:33:49","date_gmt":"2015-08-18T18:33:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/com\/?post_type=profile&#038;p=1701"},"modified":"2025-10-15T16:04:14","modified_gmt":"2025-10-15T20:04:14","slug":"maggie-mulvihill","status":"publish","type":"profile","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/com\/profile\/maggie-mulvihill\/","title":{"rendered":"Maggie Mulvihill"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Maggie Mulvihill is a veteran reporter, data journalism trainer, news entrepreneur, First Amendment advocate and attorney.&nbsp;She has been a member of the BU Journalism faculty since 2009, where she developed the Journalism Department\u2019s first data journalism course and teaches the Law and Ethics of Media and reporting classes.&nbsp;Among other news outlets, her work has appeared in the Associated Press,&nbsp;<em>The Washington Post<\/em>, <em>The Boston Globe<\/em>, <em>The Maine Monitor<\/em>, <em>The New Bedford Light<\/em>, <em>The Cape Cod Times<\/em>, <em>The Worcester Telegram<\/em>, <em>The American Bar Association Journal<\/em>, <em>NBC Digital<\/em>, <em>New England Living<\/em>, <em>The Lawrence Eagle Tribune<\/em>, <em>The Berkshire Eagle<\/em>, <em>The Middlesex Daily News<\/em>, <em>The Patriot Ledger<\/em>,&nbsp;<em>The Contrarian Boston<\/em>, <em>The TAB<\/em> newspapers, <em>The Boston Herald<\/em>, the <em>Crime Report<\/em>, <em>Massachusetts&#8217; Lawyer&#8217;s Weekly<\/em>, The Center for Public Integrity, National Public Radio (NPR), WGBH and WBUR.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mulvihill&#8217;s students have earned more than a dozen regional or national journalism awards for stories ranging from juvenile killers to the criminalization of the homeless, to uncovering serious deficiencies in workplace safety during COVID-19 and state lottery systems.&nbsp;Mulvihill and her students collaborate regularly with other local and national journalists and in 2023, her students were part of a collaboration that won first place for small newsrooms in the Al Neuharth Innovation in Investigative Journalism Award from the <a href=\"https:\/\/awards.journalists.org\/winners\/2023\/\">Online News Association.<\/a>&nbsp;Also, in 2023, Mulvihill&#8217;s students shared in the <a href=\"https:\/\/merrill.umd.edu\/articles\/howard-centers-mega-billions-project-wins-shaufler-prize-journalism-asu-cronkite-school#:~:text=COLLEGE%20PARK%20%E2%80%94%20The%20Howard%20Center%20for%20Investigative,project%2C%20%E2%80%9CMega%20Billions%3A%20The%20great%20lottery%20wealth%20transfer.%E2%80%9D\">Shaufler Prize for Journalism<\/a> for their reporting on flaws and discrimination within state lottery systems.&nbsp;In 2022, her students were part of the team honored as a finalist in the student category in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ire.org\/2022-ire-award-winners\/\">2022 Investigative Reporters and Editors awards<\/a>.&nbsp;Among other honors, Mulvihill&#8217;s students have won first place for in-depth reporting in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spj.org\/news.asp?ref=1791\">Society of Professional Journalist&#8217;s Region 1 Mark of Excellence Awards,&nbsp;<\/a>were named finalists for the prestigious Livingston Award for Young Journalists, were honored with a first-place reporting prize by the National Federation of Press Women and won the <a href=\"https:\/\/thesoutherneronline.com\/3768\/news\/newspaper-guild-honors-kleber-as-2012-david-s-barr-award-winner\/\">collegiate David S. Barr Award from the Newspaper Guild.<\/a> Her students also worked on a national government ethics series, led by the Center for Public Integrity, which was a finalist for the Goldsmith Investigative Reporting Prize in 2013.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mulvihill is the co-founder of the New England Center for Investigative Reporting and while at BU, was named a Faculty Fellow at the Rafik B. Hariri Institute for Computing and Computational Science &amp; Engineering. She serves on the Finance Subcommittee for the non-profit journalism organization, Investigative Reporters and Editors, was a longtime member of the Steering Committee of the Reporter\u2019s Committee for Freedom of the Press, where she now serves on the Leadership Council, and is a member of the board of the New England First Amendment Coalition.&nbsp;She was a 2004\u20132005 fellow at the Nieman Foundation for Journalism at Harvard University and in 2014 was named to the Federal Freedom of Information Act Advisory Committee.&nbsp;While at BU, Mulvihill has served in numerous capacities in additional to instructing students, including as a member of faculty search committees and the Academic Misconduct, Curriculum and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion committees.&nbsp;She mentors scores of young journalists, has served as a judge for national journalism contests and regularly trains reporters in data journalism, investigative reporting, and public records access techniques.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":9776,"template":"","interest":[],"discipline-type":[1424],"profile-type":[1463],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/com\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/profile\/1701"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/com\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/profile"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/com\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/profile"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/com\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/9776"}],"version-history":[{"count":11,"href":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/com\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/profile\/1701\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":41300,"href":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/com\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/profile\/1701\/revisions\/41300"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/com\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=1701"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"interest","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/com\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/interest?post=1701"},{"taxonomy":"discipline-type","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/com\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/discipline-type?post=1701"},{"taxonomy":"profile-type","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/com\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/profile-type?post=1701"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
