You will be asked to submit a personal statement explaining your interest in the new program, which will be reviewed by that program to determine whether a transfer can be approved.

If the transfer is approved, Graduate Affairs will work with you to determine which previously completed courses, if any, can be applied toward the new program’s degree requirements and whether changing programs will affect your expected graduation date.

Extending your program

Students in three-semester programs who want to extend their studies to a fourth, part-time semester must plan their course schedules carefully to ensure they have an outstanding academic requirement or remaining credits to complete during the additional semester.

Visit the Registration and Enrollment page for detailed information about extending your program, applying for graduation with a revised graduation date, part-time enrollment, and additional considerations for international students.

Transfer credit

Graduate students may generally transfer up to 8 eligible credits from another institution, subject to review and approval. Transfer credits cannot have been used toward the completion of an undergraduate or previous master’s degree.

Students must submit a syllabus for each course they wish to transfer. All transfer credit requests must be reviewed and approved by the appropriate department chair or division head.

Approved transfer credits may be applied toward elective requirements where applicable or, at the discretion of the department chair or division head, may be used in place of a required COM course. If transfer credit is used in place of a required course, the student may need to complete another course to meet the total number of units required for the degree.

Time limit for degree completion

Graduate degree requirements must be completed within seven years of the student’s first registration in the degree program.

Students who need additional time must submit a petition requesting an extension before the end of the seven-year limit. Students who exceed the time limit without an approved extension will not be permitted to register.

Leave of absence and withdrawal (including parental and medical leave of absence)

Students who need to temporarily interrupt their studies may request a leave of absence. Students who intend to permanently leave their degree program must formally withdraw from the University.

Before making either decision, review the COM policy on withdrawal, leave of absence, and reinstatement and University-wide policy.

Upon written request and for appropriate cause, students may generally take up to four semesters of leave. Leaves beyond four semesters are granted only in exceptional circumstances, such as substantiated illness or military service. Students who exceed four semesters of leave may need to petition for reinstatement or, in some cases, reapply for admission.

How to request a leave of absence or withdrawal

If you’re considering a leave of absence or withdrawal, contact COM Graduate Affairs (comgrad@bu.edu) as early as possible–ideally before the semester begins.

Contact COM Graduate Affairs. Email from your BU email account to explain that you’re considering a leave of absence or withdrawal.

Submit your written request and required form. Review the College’s policy on academic suspension and dismissal for complete information.

As outlined earlier in this handbook, master’s students must maintain both a semester and cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher and may earn no more than two C range grades (C+, C, C-) totaling no more than 8 units, over the duration of the program. Grades below C- do not count toward the degree.

Students who do not meet minimum academic standards or who fail to make satisfactory academic progress may be placed on academic probation or suspension or dismissed from the program.

Academic probation

A student is normally placed on academic probation when the student’s semester or cumulative GPA falls below 3.0 or when the student fails to make satisfactory academic progress.

At the College’s discretion, a student whose academic performance falls below required standards may instead be considered for suspension or dismissal. Academic standing may also affect a student’s eligibility for financial aid and scholarships.

Students are reviewed after one semester on academic probation. Students who achieve both a semester and cumulative GPA of at least a 3.0 and demonstrate satisfactory academic progress will return to good academic standing.

Students who do not return to good academic standing or make satisfactory academic progress after the probationary semester may be subject to academic suspension, dismissal, or an additional semester of academic probation, as determined by the College on a case-by-case basis. Normally, a student may remain on academic probation for no more than two consecutive semesters; however, the length of the probationary period is at the discretion of the department or division, in consultation with the College.

Academic suspension or dismissal

Students may face academic suspension or dismissal if they do not achieve good academic standing or make satisfactory academic progress following a semester of academic probation.

A student may also be dismissed if the department or division determines, based on a student’s academic record and remaining degree requirements, that the student cannot raise their GPA to the level required for graduation. Dismissal results in permanent separation from the University.

Appealing a suspension or dismissal

Students may appeal a suspension or dismissal in writing, to the Associate Dean of the College within the timeline specified in their written notice. The student will be notified in writing of the decision.

A final appeal may be submitted to the Dean of the College. The Dean’s decision in cases of suspension or dismissal is final.

Reinstatement and readmission

Students seeking to return to COM after an absence, withdrawal, or academic suspension should review BU’s withdrawal, leave of absence, and reinstatement policy.

Reinstatement after an unapproved absence

Graduate students who are absent for one or more semesters without officially taking a leave of absence must contact COM Graduate Affairs at least eight weeks before the start of the semester in which they wish to return to ask about petitioning for reinstatement.

Reinstatement after academic suspension

Students who have completed their period of academic suspension must meet with COM Graduate Affairs to discuss the process for reestablishing their academic standing and returning to the program.

Readmission after withdrawal or termination

Students who have withdrawn or been terminated from a COM graduate program may apply for readmission.
