We provide academic advice, curriculum information and personal advising for COM undergraduates. Through academic advising students will be able to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Articulate the intent of general education, school\/college, and program requirements.<\/li><li>Craft, execute and continually assess a coherent educational plan, including post graduate options, based on assessment of abilities, aspirations, interests, and values.<\/li><li>Demonstrate an understanding of the policies and procedures that guide progress to the degree.<\/li><li>Identify and access campus resources and co-curricular opportunities to help reach educational, career and life goals.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Information about academic advising across Boston University and helpful policies for academic planning can be found here at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/advising\/\">www.bu.edu\/advising<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><strong>COM Advising Model<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>COM offers our undergraduate students a dual advising model. Students will have access to our professional advising staff through the COM Undergraduate Affairs Office (COM, Room 123) and also have an assigned faculty mentor through their major department.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><strong>Professional Academic Advising<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The COM Undergraduate Affairs professional advisors discuss:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Advising on remaining requirements for graduation<\/li><li>Advising on BU HUB requirements<\/li><li>Advising on the mechanics of Double Majors, the Dual Degree Program, Minors, Intra University Transfer, Study Abroad, summer course approvals, AP credit, IB credit, transfer credit, etc.<\/li><li>Advising on possible personal and social issues<\/li><li>Advising regarding academic difficulty or academic probation<\/li><li>Reviewing a student\u2019s schedule plan for a term (continuing COM single degree students do not have advising service indicator holds)<\/li><li>Advising on University resources<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3>Schedule an Academic Advising Appointment<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Students may schedule an academic advising appointment with a COM Undergraduate Affairs advisor through MyBU Student. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To do so, visit your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/mybu\/\">MyBU Student Dashboard<\/a>, click on \u201cAdvising,\u201d then select \u201cAppointments\u201d from the left-hand menu. Click the red <strong>\u201cNew Appointment\u201d<\/strong> button on the right side of the screen. Under <strong>Department<\/strong>, use the dropdown to select <strong>\u201cCOM UGrad Academic Advising.\u201d<\/strong> You may then browse the list of COM Undergraduate Affairs advisors and select the one you&#8217;d like to meet with. Choose an available date and time from their calendar that fits your schedule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you&#8217;re flexible about which advisor you&#8217;d like to meet with, you can search through multiple advisors\u2019 availability to find the appointment that works best for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Please be mindful of the meeting modality (in-person or via Zoom) as you schedule the appointment that works best for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><strong>Faculty Mentoring<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>To encourage mentoring relationships between COM students and COM faculty, all COM students with a declared major are assigned a faculty mentor.&nbsp; A faculty mentor is a professor in your selected major who can serve as an additional resource for you throughout your Boston University career (and often beyond).&nbsp; A listing of faculty office hours is posted outside of each department. The Film and Television Department is located in COM, room 118; the Journalism Department is located in COM, room 131; and the Mass Communication, Advertising and Public Relations Department is located in COM, room 124.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The faculty mentors discuss topics including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>Professional\/educational mentoring<\/li><li>A sounding board to learn more about the major and accompanying industry<\/li><li>Advice regarding potential internships and jobs<\/li><li>The faculty have a general knowledge of the degree requirements within their major field (specific COM major courses, please speak with an Undergraduate Affairs professional advisor to confirm&nbsp; graduation requirements)<\/li><li>Advice on which specific major classes will help a student work towards reaching their educational and professional goals.<\/li><li>Advice on extracurricular activities that relate to the major field<\/li><li>Discussion on educational and career goals<\/li><li>Potentially provide networking connections between mentees and alumni in the communication industries<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3><strong>Newsletter<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>COM Undergraduate Affairs sends a newsletter to all our majors each Wednesday during the fall and spring terms when classes are in session. We encourage all students to review the newsletter each week for important updates, information, and upcoming events.&nbsp; Please do not unsubscribe from the COM newsletter.&nbsp; Once a student unsubscribes from the newsletter, we cannot re-subscribe you.&nbsp; If you are a non-COM student who would like to be added to the weekly newsletter distribution list please contact us at&nbsp;<a
