As the sun was setting during a late afternoon practice of the BU men\u2019s and women\u2019s Ultimate Frisbee teams last month, Teddy Kahn (CAS\u201917), vice president of the men\u2019s team\u2014the Ozone Pilots\u2014and his fellow players stopped to watch their colleagues on the Lady Pilots team. The women were doing something out of the ordinary.<\/p>\n

A stack of discs sat near them, waiting to be inscribed. The women got to work penning messages, then held their discs aloft as each of them was photographed for a campaign they had launched, titled \u201cI Need Feminism Because\u2026\u201d The campaign, which Lady Pilot cocaptain Jacki Salustro (COM\u201917) says was created after some players were feeling disappointed and fearful following the presidential election, is designed to draw attention to the need for gender equity.<\/p>\n

After the election, says Salustro, \u201cI remember thinking, wow, we haven\u2019t come as far as I thought. We\u2019re in this college bubble where you think that everyone is open-minded and that we\u2019ve come so far in how we see things and see people.\u201d<\/p>\n

When the men realized what the women were doing, they decided to join the photo campaign. Soon, photos of both male and female players with their inscribed Frisbees were posted on the women\u2019s team\u2019s\u00a0Facebook page<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The campaign was suggested by rookie Apryl Hsu (CGS\u201917) in the wake of Hillary Clinton\u2019s election loss. It was \u201cseeing the lack of morale among women,\u201d Hsu says, \u201cespecially the women on our team who are so passionate about feminism and equality,\u201d that made her bring the idea to the captains.<\/p>\nRead more on BU Today<\/a>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
