{"id":867,"date":"2010-10-15T12:25:39","date_gmt":"2010-10-15T17:25:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/com\/?p=867"},"modified":"2015-02-27T12:26:12","modified_gmt":"2015-02-27T17:26:12","slug":"com-students-will-write-for-globe-in-new-partnership","status":"publish","type":"bu-article","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/com\/articles\/com-students-will-write-for-globe-in-new-partnership\/","title":{"rendered":"COM students will write for Globe in new partnership"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>BU students will cover neighborhood and town news for Boston.com\u2019s \u201cYour Town\u201d hyper-local websites as part of their studies within the College of Communications in a new agreement announced between <em>The Boston Globe<\/em> and Boston University.<\/p>\n<p>The new program will launch later this fall and will be coordinated by BU professors and the <em>Globe<\/em>\u2019s editors.<\/p>\n<p>Boston.com currently has 43 \u201cYour Town\u201d sites in and around Boston. \u201cYour Town\u201d sites act as digital town centers, offering a highly localized news experience for readers. Over the past several weeks, Boston.com launched 12 neighborhood sites in the city of Boston and announced plans for more in the coming weeks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re delighted with this collaboration. It provides \u2018Your Town\u2019 readers with even more local coverage and enriches the educational experience of BU\u2019s students,\u2019\u2019 said David Dahl, the <em>Globe<\/em>\u2019s regional editor.<\/p>\n<p>Tom Fiedler, dean of Boston University\u2019s College of Communication, said the agreement expanded the school\u2019s commitment to provide students with real reporting experience while supplying in-depth coverage of news affecting the greater Boston area. <\/p>\n<p>Students in BU\u2019s journalism department, which has produced 20 Pulitzer Prize winners, also provide daily news coverage to newspapers in Massachusetts and New England through the department\u2019s Washington, D.C. and State House programs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis program offers benefits for both community residents, who gain from increased news and information about their neighborhoods, and our students, who learn journalism by doing it under the guidance of our faculty and <em>Globe<\/em> editors,\u201d Fiedler said.<\/p>\n<p>The students\u2019 work will appear on the \u201cYour Town\u201d sites. The sites feature stories by \u201cYour Town\u201d correspondents, links to area blogs, <em>Globe<\/em> stories, and user-submitted photos and articles.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour Town\u201d was launched in 2009 to deliver an online community experience that allows readers to learn, contribute, and share information about life in their own hometown.
