Heavy social network users who read friends\u2019 updates and share information about themselves become acclimated to the act of posting their information as they read daily about their friends and the world, spurring them to post more themselves\u2014and to share more during off-line encounters.<\/p>\n<p>This effect of social media is one of the big takeaways of a new study of undergraduate-aged Facebook users coauthored by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/com\/profile\/mina-tsay-vogel\/\">Mina Tsay-Vogel<\/a>, a College of Communication assistant professor of mass communications and codirector of BU\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/com\/research-at-com\/communication-research-center\/\">Communication Research Center<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople sometimes don\u2019t realize the powerful socializing role of social media,\u201d says Tsay-Vogel. \u201cYes, we are maintaining relationships with others, and we might all get to know the most current news and what people are doing, and it\u2019s very satiating. But we might not realize that it\u2019s also affecting how we\u2019re seeing information disclosure in the real world, and how it\u2019s also impacting us to then disclose our own personal information.
