{"id":5919,"date":"2015-11-10T13:49:23","date_gmt":"2015-11-10T18:49:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/com\/?p=5919"},"modified":"2016-01-27T15:17:10","modified_gmt":"2016-01-27T20:17:10","slug":"cinematheque-screening-series-spotlight","status":"publish","type":"bu-article","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/com\/articles\/cinematheque-screening-series-spotlight\/","title":{"rendered":"Cinematheque Screening Series: Spotlight"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last week, the real-life reporters portrayed by A-list talent in the new film <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt1895587\/\">Spotlight<\/a> celebrated how well the film stuck to the facts about the Boston Globe Spotlight team\u2019s investigation of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Boston\u2019s decades long cover-up of pedophile priests. The film opens today nationwide.<\/p>\n<p>The Pulitzer Prize\u2013winning reporters\u2014Sacha Pfeiffer (MET\u201994, SED\u201912), Mike Rezendes (CAS\u201978), Matt Carroll, Walter V. Robinson, and Ben Bradlee, Jr.\u2014fielded questions after the film was screened to an audience of College of Communication students and faculty at the AMC Loews Boston Common. The event was part of COM\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/com\/academics\/what-we-do\/film-television\/cinematheque\/\">Cinematheque series<\/a>, which brings accomplished filmmakers to campus to screen and discuss their work.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWhat you saw in two hours was five months of our work,\u201d said Pfeiffer, who recently returned to the Globe after a stint at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wbur.org\/\">WBUR<\/a>, BU\u2019s National Public Radio station. \u201cObviously you have to take a little bit of dramatic license, you need to speed things up, take three different scenes and put them into one. There are times where there\u2019s a talk on the golf course, when in reality it probably happened on the telephone, but a two-hour movie of telephone calls isn\u2019t going to be very interesting. I think we were all very impressed with how closely they stayed to what authentically happened.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In 2002, the Spotlight team published an explosive story claiming that the archdiocese knew that priest John J. Geoghan had been sexually abusing children for decades. Yet instead of turning him in to face prosecution, the paper reported, the Church several times moved Geoghan to different parishes and assured parents that he wouldn\u2019t be allowed to repeat his crimes.
