{"id":48,"date":"2014-03-21T16:34:01","date_gmt":"2014-03-21T21:34:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/com\/?p=48"},"modified":"2015-10-20T15:51:33","modified_gmt":"2015-10-20T19:51:33","slug":"colbert-report-producer-speaks-at-bu","status":"publish","type":"bu-article","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/com\/articles\/colbert-report-producer-speaks-at-bu\/","title":{"rendered":"Colbert Report producer speaks at BU"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Colbert Report<\/em> producer <strong>Nicole Savini (&#8217;99)<\/strong> returned to BU in March for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/com\/academics\/film-tv\/cinematheque\/\">Cinematheque<\/a> series, where she screened clips and shared stories with students.<\/p>\n<p>Savini got her first taste of producing in COM&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/hothouse\/\">Hothouse Productions<\/a> program before working as an NBC page after graduation. That opened the door to work as an assistant at <em>Late Night with Conan O&#8217;Brien<\/em> before jumping to the Peabody and Emmy award-winning <em>Colbert Report<\/em>. <\/p>\n<p>Savini spoke with <em>BU Today<\/em> ahead of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/com\/news-events\/calendar\/?eid=148752\">her Friday March 21 Cinematheque screening in COM<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Working on a project for the student-run, client-driven production company Hothouse Productions, Savini was producing a public service announcement for the Massachusetts Department of Public Health. As happens &#8220;on even the most well-oiled show,&#8221; Savini says, &#8220;things started to fall apart\u2014the editing software stopped working the day before the group\u2019s deadline, making it impossible to finish the project.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/com\/about-com\/faculty-directory\/garland-waller\/\">Garland Waller<\/a><\/strong>, a College of Communication assistant professor of film and television, was, and still is, in charge of Hothouse. <\/p>\n<blockquote><p> \u201cI remember calling Professor Waller the next morning in a panic, not knowing what to do,\u201d Savini says. \u201cShe calmly said, \u2018Nicole, now you\u2019re a producer.\u2019 It was a subtle way of telling me that it was my responsibility; that being the producer means dealing with everything that goes wrong.
