{"id":46051,"date":"2026-04-29T09:15:13","date_gmt":"2026-04-29T13:15:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/com\/?post_type=bu-article&#038;p=46051"},"modified":"2026-04-29T09:15:14","modified_gmt":"2026-04-29T13:15:14","slug":"mccreary-napoli-2026-com-convocation-speakers","status":"publish","type":"bu-article","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/com\/articles\/mccreary-napoli-2026-com-convocation-speakers\/","title":{"rendered":"McCreary, Napoli: 2026 COM Convocation Speakers"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Colleen McCreary, a C-suite executive for scaling technology companies, and Philip Napoli, a researcher in the field of media and democracy, will serve as speakers at the Boston University College of Communication convocation ceremonies for 2026 graduates this May.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/com\/articles\/the-people-person\/\">McCreary<\/a> (COM\u201995) is the chief people officer for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.confluent.io\/\">Confluent<\/a>, a data streaming infrastructure company in Palo Alto, California, and chair of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/com\/about-com\/office-of-the-dean\/deans-advisory-board\/\">Dean\u2019s Advisory Board<\/a> for the College of Communication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She will address undergraduate students at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/com\/for-current-students\/undergraduate-advising\/graduation\/\">undergraduate convocation ceremony<\/a> at 9 am, Friday, May 15, at Agannis Arena, 925 Commonwealth Avenue, Boston University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With more than 20 years of experience in human resources, operations, recruiting, and mergers and acquisitions, McCreary brings a wealth of expertise in managing people operations to support rapid-growth technology companies. She has held executive team leadership roles through two IPOs and three company acquisitions, and served as a top people and communication executive for Ribbit Capital, Credit Karma, Vevo, Zynga and Electronic Arts. McCreary was a technical adviser for HBO\u2019s Silicon Valley, and inspired the character Tracy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She holds a Bachelor of Science in mass communication and public relations from Boston University\u2019s College of Communication, and a Master of Science in higher and adult education from Columbia University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/com\/articles\/graduate-convocation-speaker-talks-democracy-social-media-and-being-part-of-the-solution\/\">Napoli<\/a> (COM\u201994) is the James R. Shepley Distinguished Professor of Public Policy at <a href=\"https:\/\/sanford.duke.edu\/\">Duke University<\/a>, where he researches media regulation and democracy, and is the director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/dewitt.sanford.duke.edu\/\">DeWitt Wallace Center for Media and Democracy<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He will address graduate students at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/com\/for-current-students\/graduate-advising\/graduation-commencement\/\">graduate convocation ceremony<\/a> at 3 pm, Friday, May 15, at Walter Brown Arena, 285 Babcock Street, Boston University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Napoli is the author of four books: Foundations of Communications Policy: Principles and Process in the Regulation of Electronic Media (Hampton Press, 2001); Audience Economics: Media Institutions and the Audience Marketplace (Columbia University Press, 2003); Audience Evolution: New Technologies and the Transformation of Media Audiences (Columbia University Press, 2011), and Social Media and the Public Interest: Media Regulation in the Disinformation Age (Columbia University, 2019).
