{"id":35667,"date":"2023-02-28T12:31:26","date_gmt":"2023-02-28T17:31:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/com\/?post_type=bu-article&#038;p=35667"},"modified":"2023-02-28T12:31:27","modified_gmt":"2023-02-28T17:31:27","slug":"narrative-journalism-conference-returns-to-full-power","status":"publish","type":"bu-article","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/com\/articles\/narrative-journalism-conference-returns-to-full-power\/","title":{"rendered":"Narrative journalism conference returns to full power"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>For the first time since 2019, COM\u2019s annual <a href=\"https:\/\/combeyond.bu.edu\/offering\/the-power-of-narrative-conference\/\">Power of Narrative<\/a> conference is in full swing and in-person for the entire event this March.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Journalists, writers, and lovers of narrative storytelling will meet at the George Sherman Union on March 18, with an opening keynote at WBUR\u2019s CitySpace on March 17, both on Boston University\u2019s campus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhile there are many benefits to offering the conference virtually, I think we all have missed the feeling of learning from and with one another face-to-face,\u201d says conference director Sarah Kess. \u201cThere&#8217;s an in-person energy that can&#8217;t be replaced that I&#8217;ll be excited to experience again.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The conference, celebrating its 24th year, continues to sponsor 10 David Carr scholarships with the support of<em> The Sunday Long Read<\/em> to provide free conference attendance to journalists in historically underrepresented groups.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe scholarship honors the late David Carr, the extraordinary <em>New York Times<\/em> journalist who taught at Boston University and dedicated himself to mentorship,\u201d says Kess.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A conversation with NPR\u2019s Embedded: Capital Gazette team will open the two-day conference Friday night at the CitySpace. Author Mark Kramer will kick the Saturday schedule off followed by Jennifer Senior as the headline keynoter. Senior was the 2022 Pulitzer Prize in Feature Writing winner for her story &#8220;What Bobby McIlvaine Left Behind,\u201d which will soon be published as a book, with copies given away to all attendees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The Emancipator<\/em> co-editors-in-chief Deborah Douglas and Amber Payne will hold the keynote panel in the afternoon. Brian Stelter, a former CNN and <em>New York Times<\/em> reporter and mentee of Carr, will close the conference\u2019s events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Breakout sessions on topics such as crafting personal essays, covering China, writing the best profile, and more will be led by journalism and writing leaders in between the keynote speakers. <a href=\"https:\/\/combeyond.bu.edu\/offering\/the-power-of-narrative-conference\/\">Registration<\/a> for the virtual events at this year\u2019s Power of Narrative conference is open.
