As a COM alum and Dean (and \u201918 BU parent), it\u2019s fun for me to share a selection of achievements from the past year by students, faculty, and staff.&nbsp; COM continues to gain notice in the communication industry<em>. <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/best-american-film-schools-ranked-2022-1235190992\/\">The Hollywood Reporter<\/a><em>, <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2022\/biz\/news\/top-film-schools-north-america-1235243148\/?_hsmi=211890049&amp;_hsenc=p2ANqtz-9wR1LXmKXwfvZTLTk8Xz_2cfX0YeZjWiJgcMQZKAGK-UzcP4C0BWc0qADQeyzGBwRA__3l8O_TzHI5g2VBfuRXcnoBIg\">Variety<\/a><em>, <\/em>and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thewrap.com\/top-50-best-film-schools-2022\/\">The Wrap<\/a> again included our film and television department in their annual lists of top film schools, and <em>PR News<\/em> named our public relations program to its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prnewsonline.com\/go\/the-2023-education-a-list\/\">Education A-List<\/a>. Go, Terriers!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>STUDENTS<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><em>COVERING THE MIDTERMS: <\/em>Once again, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/articles\/2022\/com-journos-cover-the-midterms\/\">COM student journalists covered the fall election<\/a> through every angle, in every platform through BUTV10, WTBU, BU News Service and the Statehouse Program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>REDSTONE FILM FESTIVAL:<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/articles\/2022\/redstone-film-festival-returns-in-person\/\">42nd annual Redstone Film Festival<\/a> in March was in person for the first time since 2019; student filmmakers and their friends and families screened \u2013 and celebrated \u2014 top work by COM students.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>MAGAZINE LAUNCHES:<\/em> Students showcased their writing, design and entrepreneurial skills in new pubs: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/articles\/2022\/bu-students-launch-magazine-celebrating-asian-american-experience\/\">Untangle<\/a><em>,<\/em> created by <strong>Alyssa Yeh<\/strong> (COM\u201922) and Emily Wu (CAS\u201922, Wheelock\u201922), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/articles\/2022\/newbury-center-launches-elevate-first-generation-student-magazine\/\">Elevate<\/a><em>,<\/em> led by <strong>Valerie Sanchez Covaleda<\/strong> (CGS\u201922, COM\u201924) and <strong>Katarina Quach<\/strong> (COM\u201924), and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.strikemagazines.com\/chapters\/boston\">Strike<\/a><em>,<\/em> by Olivia Sanderford (CFA\u201923) and <strong>Savannah Tindall<\/strong> (COM\u201922).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/com\/articles\/student-awards-review-2021-22\/\">COM students received awards<\/a> for work in advertising, public relations, film, TV and journalism. Here are a few highlights:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>JOURNALISM HONORS: <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wgbh.org\/news\/unseen\">Unseen<\/a>, a series airing on GBH Radio and started by COM students in class, won one national and three regional Emmys as well as an award from the National Association of Black Journalists for its investigation of the commercial sexual exploitation of boys and young men.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>OBAMA FOUNDATION HONOR:<\/em> <strong>Katarina Quach<\/strong> (COM\u201924) was among <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/articles\/2022\/katarina-quach-obama-foundation-voyager-scholarship-winners\/\">Inaugural Cohort of Obama Foundation Voyager Scholarship winners<\/a>, recognized for her commitment to public service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>WEBBY AWARD:<\/em> <strong>Rohan Gupta<\/strong> won a <a href=\"https:\/\/winners.webbyawards.com\/2022\/video\/general-video\/student\/202755\/diversity-on-demand\">national Webby Award<\/a> in the Best Student Video category for a comedy short that satirizes the lack of diversity in Hollywood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>PUBLIC MEDIA AWARDS:<\/em> Two episodes of a podcast series by <strong>Jesse Remedios<\/strong> (COM\u201921) and <strong>Valerie Wencis<\/strong> (COM\u201922) and exploring Boston\u2019s history of school busing, integration and racism won top awards at this year\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/pmja.org\/pmja-announces-2022-award-winners\/\">Public Media Journalists Association<\/a>&nbsp;conference in Seattle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>ALUMNI<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><em>BLACK MEDIA SYMPOSIUM: <\/em>COM alumni from every discipline \u2013 including <strong>Kevin Merida<\/strong> (COM\u201979), executive editor of the&nbsp;<em>Los Angeles Times<\/em>, and <strong>Anthony Harrison <\/strong>(COM\u201981), current BU Alumni Council president &#8212; helped make our fall symposium, \u201cBlack Media: Reflecting on the Past and Reimagine the Future,\u201d a resounding success. You can watch recordings on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/playlist?list=PLfd1opV9b9gh4xlMRrKH4ngL6vwh02HDJ\">COM\u2019s YouTube channel<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>OSCAR HONOR: <\/em><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/articles\/2022\/alum-david-dinerstein-could-take-home-oscar-for-summer-of-soul\/\">Summer of Soul<\/a><em>,&nbsp;<\/em>produced&nbsp;by&nbsp;<strong>David Dinerstein<\/strong> (COM\u201984), won an Academy Award for Best Documentary Film in March, then in April, it won a Grammy for Best Music Film.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>PULITZER HONORS: <\/em><strong>Samantha Gross<\/strong> (&#8217;18) shared in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pulitzer.org\/winners\/staff-miami-herald\">Pulitzer Prize for &#8220;Breaking News<\/a>&#8221; with the <em>Miami Herald <\/em>newsroom, awarded for the newspaper&#8217;s coverage of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.miamiherald.com\/news\/local\/community\/miami-dade\/article261254802.html\">Surfside condo collapse<\/a>. <strong>Kimberly Johnson<\/strong> (\u201996,\u201998) was the lead editor on&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/the-tulsa-race-massacre-100-years-later-11622221205\">The Tulsa Race Massacre: 100 Years Later<\/a>, a&nbsp;<em>Wall Street Journal<\/em>&nbsp;project that was one of two Pulitzer finalists in the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pulitzer.org\/finalists\/staff-wall-street-journal-3?fbclid=IwAR3ttdgXwGibpso-SrVVuoY3wBw3rpuLIpRVSaRP43ADfYlwgIxluWhmwe4\">Explanatory News category<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>MURROW HONORS:<\/em> <strong>Alex Hyacinthe<\/strong> (COM&#8217;14), digital audio producer for ESPN, was part of the team honored with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rtdna.org\/content\/2022_rtdna_edward_r_murrow_awards_national_honorees\">national Edward R. Murrow<\/a> award for its <a href=\"https:\/\/dcs.megaphone.fm\/ESP5503384073.mp3?key=7a1cfafa2672fd125de745c2eb699618\">podcast feature on broadcaster and former NBA star Jalen Rose.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>WILDLIFE PHOTOGRAPHY:<\/em> <strong>Karine Aigner<\/strong> (COM\u201996) was among winners for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/articles\/2022\/wildlife-photographer-of-the-year-competition\/\">Wildlife Photographer of the Year<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>ALUMNI BOOKS:<\/em> COM alumni authors celebrated the publication of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/com\/articles\/9-great-books-by-com-alums\/\">numerous high-profile books<\/a>, including: <em>Dilla Time: The Life and Afterlife of J Dilla, the Hip-Hop Producer Who Reinvented Rhythm&nbsp;by<\/em> Dan Charnas (CAS\u201989, COM\u201989), <em>Keya Das\u2019s Second Act<\/em><strong> <\/strong>by <strong>Sopan Deb <\/strong>(COM\u201910), and<strong> <\/strong><em>Red Carpet: Hollywood, China, and the Global Battle for Cultural Supremacy by&nbsp;<\/em><strong>Erich Schwartzel <\/strong>(COM\u201909)<strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>FACULTY<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><em>MISINFORMATION RESEARCH: <\/em><strong>Traci Hong<\/strong>, an associate professor of media science, and research colleagues were awarded the inaugural grants from BU\u2019s Center for Emerging Infectious Diseases (CEID) for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/ceid\/2022\/01\/14\/boston-universitys-center-for-emerging-infectious-diseases-policy-research-ceid-announces-25k-pilot-grant-awardees\/\">studying social media misinformation and vaccine hesitancy<\/a>. <strong>Chris Wells<\/strong>, associate professor of journalism and emerging media studies, is leading a team that includes COM professors <strong>Arunima Krishna<\/strong> and <strong>Michelle Amazeen<\/strong> to analyze the origins and impact of climate change mis- and disinformation, through a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/igs\/research\/projects\/focused-research-program\/\">new grant program of BU\u2019s Institute for Global Sustainability<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>JOHNSON HONORED:<\/em> <strong>Michelle Johnson<\/strong>, adviser to COM\u2019s BU News Service who retired this year from COM\u2019s journalism faculty, was inducted into the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nlgja.org\/blog\/2022\/09\/michelle-johnson\/\">LGBTQ Journalists Hall of Fame<\/a> and received the <a href=\"https:\/\/awards.journalists.org\/entries\/michelle-johnson\/?fbclid=IwAR0jtzKXo8WvdPxmfBdYEfaZnspMnWmBIO5tE7Skh00PAmaX_YVFFAb6QEo\">Rich Jaroslovsky Founder Award<\/a> from the Online News Association.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>FACULTY BOOKS:<\/em> <strong>Mark McClennan<\/strong>, a COM lecturer in public relations, celebrated his first published book, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Ethical-Voices-Practicing-Relations-Integrity\/dp\/1637424183\/\">Ethical Voices: Practicing Public Relations With Integrity<\/a>. Also out this year: COM Assistant Professor <strong>Patrice Oppliger<\/strong>\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.routledge.com\/Transmasculinity-on-Television\/Oppliger\/p\/book\/9781032068985\">Transmasculinity on Television<\/a> and COM Writing Lecturer <strong>Jay Atkinson<\/strong>\u2019s short story collection, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Tree-Stand-Jay-Atkinson\/dp\/1604893362\">The Tree Stand<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>LEADERSHIP CHANGES:<\/em> <strong>Brian McGrory<\/strong>, editor-in-chief of the <em>Boston Globe<\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/articles\/2022\/boston-globe-editor-brian-mcgrory-to-lead-bu-department-of-journalism\/\">will join COM next semester<\/a> as chair of our journalism department. Also, <strong>Amy Shanler<\/strong> assumed the role of assistant chair of the Department of Mass Communication, Advertising and Public Relations, and <strong>Marni Zelnick<\/strong> is now assistant chair of the Department of Film and Television.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many congratulations to our students, faculty, and staff for a wonderful year\u2013and huge thanks to all of you for your support of COM.
