Louisiana and, separately, the pregnancy experiences of transgender and non-binary people, thanks to fellowships they received this month from the Pulitzer Center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/com\/files\/2021\/06\/DaphneMark-1-e1623953348635-1024x1024.jpeg\" alt=\"Daphne Mark\" class=\"wp-image-30264\" width=\"256\" height=\"256\"\/><figcaption>Daphne Mark<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Daphne Mark, a first-year graduate student in journalism at COM, will use her fellowship to compare Louisiana\u2019s relatively successful efforts to limit illness linked to mosquitos with interventions attempted around the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSummer is the height of mosquito season,\u201d Daphne wrote in her proposal. \u201cArmed with sociologist Arlie Russel Hoschild\u2019s <em>Strangers in their Own Land<\/em>, a meager Cajun French vocabulary, and my great uncle T\u2019Boy\u2019s <em>Couyon<\/em> wisdom, I plan to visit my family\u2019s ancestral home in Calcasieu Parish to meet with spray truck drivers, West Nile patients, and representatives of Louisiana Animal Disease Diagnostic Lab.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rachael Sorcher, a student pursuing her master\u2019s at the School of Public Health, will \u201cexplore the pregnancy experiences of TNB (transgender and non-binary) individuals to shed light on the interpersonal and systemic challenges this population may face during a life-changing event, and how some physicians <em>are<\/em> providing respectful and responsive maternity care,\u201d she wrote in her proposal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/com\/files\/2021\/06\/Sorcher_headshot-scaled-e1623953507547-1024x1024.jpeg\" alt=\"Rachael Sorcher\" class=\"wp-image-30266\" width=\"256\" height=\"256\"\/><figcaption>Rachael Sorcher<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis story will amplify TNB individuals\u2019 voices above the political noise to deepen understanding of their unique yet similar pregnancy needs and how physicians can provide just care,\u201d Sorcher wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pulitzercenter.org\/\">The Pulitzer Center<\/a> is a nonprofit journalism organization dedicated to raising awareness of underreported global issues through direct support for quality journalism across all media platforms and a program of outreach and education to schools and universities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The fellowships were awarded by the Pulitzer Center as part of its partnership with<a href=\"http:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/pghs\/\"> Boston University\u2019s Program for Global
