{"id":263,"date":"2012-09-04T16:30:52","date_gmt":"2012-09-04T21:30:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/com\/?p=263"},"modified":"2015-02-20T16:38:17","modified_gmt":"2015-02-20T21:38:17","slug":"caryl-rivers-virgins-released-as-e-book","status":"publish","type":"bu-article","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/com\/articles\/caryl-rivers-virgins-released-as-e-book\/","title":{"rendered":"Caryl Rivers&#8217; <em>Virgins<\/em> released as e-book"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/com\/files\/2010\/01\/rivers_caryl.jpg\" alt=\"Caryl Rivers\" title=\"Caryl Rivers\" width=\"234\" height=\"300\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-4674\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/com\/about-com\/faculty-directory\/caryl-rivers\/\"><strong>Prof. Caryl Rivers<\/strong><\/a>\u2019 best-selling novel, <em>Virgins<\/em>, is back in circulation\u2014thanks to Diversion Press, a new e-publisher.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Boston Globe<\/em>\u2019s Jan Gardner, in her book column, \u201cWord on the Street\u201d reported, \u201cIn Virgins, Catholic schoolgirls coming of age in the mid-1950s chafe at a world that refuses to take women seriously. The 1984 comic novel by Caryl Rivers sold a million copies worldwide. This summer, <em>Virgins<\/em> has been released as an e-book and the issue of sexism in the Catholic Church is still making headlines, with the Vatican having accused nuns of overstepping their bounds.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI must admit it didn\u2019t occur to me that some of the issues I was writing about \u2014 like the equality of women in the church \u2014 would still be in the news,\u201d Rivers wrote in an e-mail. \u201cI would have thought we\u2019d be way beyond that now, especially since some of my early role models for feminism were nuns.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In an article for the Women\u2019s Media Center in July 2012, Professor Rivers noted the similarities between the past and present for women in the church. \u201c<em>Virgins<\/em> is about 50s girls trying to rebel against a world that had no place for women in serious matters. Now the Vatican is giving that message to its own most valuable asset, the women who are the heart and soul of the church. But guess what? The nuns are not shutting up. They have told Vatican officials that it\u2019s they who are out of step, not the women who are doing the work that Christ commands\u2014healing the sick and succoring the poor. Most Catholics seem to agree with the sentiment I saw recently on a T-shirt.
