Many experts agree that gun violence in the United States is a national public health crisis, but mainstream media coverage often fails to provide a nuanced and contextualized picture of gun violence. This panel will explore the current state of gun violence reporting in the U.S., the pitfalls of focusing on only one type of tragedy, and what specifically the media should do in order to report on gun violence in a more ethical, impactful, and constructive way.

Panel: Abené Clayton, reporter, The Guardian; Dr. Elinor Kaufman, assistant professor of surgery in the division of trauma, surgical critical care, and emergency surgery, University of Pennsylvania; Naseem Miller, senior health editor, The Journalist’s Resource; Sarah Kess, BU College of Communication, moderator.
