Dr. Mor is the Florence Pirce Grant Professor of Community Health in the Brown University School of Public Health and a Research Health Scientist at the Providence VA Medical Center. Dr. Mor has been on the faculty of the Department of Community Health since 1981 until it became the Department of Health Services, Policy and Practice. He was tenured in 1987 and promoted to Professor in 1990. Dr. Mor was one of the founders of the Department&#8217;s graduate program in 1986 and directed the Center for Gerontology and Health Care Research for 10 years. He served as Chair of the Department of Community Health from 1996 until 2010. While Chair he instituted an expansion of the Department\u2019s graduate programs, growing the doctoral programs in Epidemiology and Biostatistics and then adding a Ph.D. program in Health Services Research. In 2000, with the approval of the University Corporation, the Department began to offer a Master\u2019s degree in Public Health (MPH) for both doctorally prepared and non-doctorally prepared students. In 2002 Dr. Mor and Dr. Terrie (Fox) Wetle, the Associate Dean for Public Health, at the urging of the Provost and President, developed a plan to increase the number of tenure track faculty by 17 over a period of 5 years. The plan was approved and successfully completed with the creation of 4 new departments from the faculty of the Department of Community Health.<\/p>\n<h3>Professional Interests<\/h3>\n<p>Dr. Mor has had a long history of conducting research projects, surveys, and longitudinal evaluation studies in the rehabilitation relevant areas of long-term care, chronic disease, and aging. He has authored or edited five books, 30 book chapters and over 400 peer reviewed papers in scientific journals on subjects ranging from the costs of health service programs to the effects of such treatments on functional health and the quality of life of patients served. He has conducted major research projects on hospice care, nursing homes, residential care and care management services for the aged and chronically ill, the costs and benefits of various models of cancer treatment, the patterns of medical services used by cancer patients, the costs and benefits of community based AIDS services, Medicare reimbursement and eligibility policies, and the role of hospice in nursing homes. Dr. Mor was one of the authors of the Congressionally mandated Minimum Data Set (MDS) for Nursing Home Resident Assessment and evaluated its implementation, focusing particularly on the manner it was implemented. Dr. Mor has developed several summary measures based upon MDS data to characterize residents&#8217; physical, cognitive and psycho-social functioning, all of which have been used in resident and facility level analyses of the quality of nursing home care in US and international populations.
