{"id":8847,"date":"2021-08-04T15:41:36","date_gmt":"2021-08-04T19:41:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/classics\/?p=8847"},"modified":"2021-08-04T15:41:36","modified_gmt":"2021-08-04T19:41:36","slug":"uden-humanities-summer-program-for-high-school-students","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/classics\/2021\/08\/04\/uden-humanities-summer-program-for-high-school-students\/","title":{"rendered":"Prof. Uden featured in BU Today for Humanities Summer Program for High School Students"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Associate Professor and Department Chair <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/classics\/faculty-profiles\/james-uden\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">James Uden<\/a> was featured in BU Today for co-teaching a three-week summer program hosted by the Boston University Center for the Humanities (BUCH) and The Teagle Foundation. The program introduced local Boston area students to the college experience and the humanities while strengthening their writing, analytical, and public speaking skills.<\/p>\n<p>Each week was taught by a different BU professor and focused on a different area within the humanities. Professor Uden taught the first week focusing on classical texts and art<em>. <\/em><span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/afam\/profile\/paula-austin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Paula Austin<\/a>, Assistant Professor of History and of African American Studies, taught the second week about the history of Black social movements. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/writingprogram\/people\/writing-program-faculty\/marisa-milanese\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Marisa Milanese<\/a>, <\/span><span>Master Lecturer in the CAS Writing Program, taught the last week about<\/span><span> documentary filmmaking.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Students appreciated the academic rigor, depth of analysis, and passion that the professors brought to the material. Likewise, the professors noted how skilled and thoughtful the students were. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/english\/profile\/6416\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Susan Mizruchi<\/a>, Director of the BUCH, said &#8220;&#8230; <span>many of these students could walk right into a college class and be ready to discuss any number of humanities subjects.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Professor Uden spoke about the impact that a program like this can have on high school students saying &#8220;I think it\u2019s a great thing for the University to be appealing to a broader body of high school students.
