{"id":8169,"date":"2021-01-28T11:15:01","date_gmt":"2021-01-28T16:15:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/classics\/?page_id=8169"},"modified":"2023-09-19T09:44:33","modified_gmt":"2023-09-19T13:44:33","slug":"ancient-greek","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/classics\/academics\/undergraduate-programs\/undergraduate-academics\/ancient-greek\/","title":{"rendered":"Ancient Greek"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>Study Ancient Greek at BU!<\/h3>\n<p>Ancient Greek offers students a deeper understanding of some of the world\u2019s most influential works of drama, philosophy, history, and theology.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Students who study ancient Greek will:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span>Read the philosophical works of <strong>Plato<\/strong>, the <strong>New Testament<\/strong>, the <em>Iliad <\/em>and <em>Odyssey <\/em>of <strong>Homer<\/strong>, the thrilling love poetry of the female poet <strong>Sappho<\/strong>, and classic tragedies such as <strong>Euripides<\/strong>\u2019 <em>Medea <\/em>and Sophocles\u2019 <em>Antigone, <\/em>among many other works<em>.<\/em><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Explore and discuss the meaning of the texts through study of genre, style, and cultural context.<\/span><\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Come closer to the thoughts, hopes and ideas of the Greeks, whose myths, art, and political thought have left a lasting impression on later world cultures.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Students who have learned Greek have gone on to careers in <strong>medicine<\/strong>, <strong>law<\/strong>, <strong>education<\/strong>, and <strong>editing<\/strong>, among many others.<\/p>\n<p>Four semesters of Ancient Greek (or their equivalent) satisfies the CAS language requirement.
