{"id":7550,"date":"2020-09-28T12:55:57","date_gmt":"2020-09-28T16:55:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/classics\/?page_id=7550"},"modified":"2023-10-17T15:18:04","modified_gmt":"2023-10-17T19:18:04","slug":"classics-philosophy-major","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/classics\/academics\/undergraduate-programs\/majors\/classics-philosophy-major\/","title":{"rendered":"Classics &#038; Philosophy Major"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span>In addition to the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/academics\/cas\/programs\/degree-overview\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">general requirements<\/a><span>\u00a0that all College of Arts and Science students must require, students with a major in Classics &amp; Philosophy must also complete the following requirements.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Students interested in a major in Classics &amp; Philosophy must consult an advisor in both the Department of Classical Studies and the Department of Philosophy.<a href=\"\/classics\/files\/2020\/03\/Major_ClassicsAndPhilosophy.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A <strong>minimum of twelve courses:<\/strong> six from Classics and six from Philosophy, all with a grade of C or better<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Classics requirements:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><span>One course in Greek History or Civilization<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li>CL101 World of Greece<\/li>\n<li>CL321 Greek History<\/li>\n<li>CG101 World of Modern Greece<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>CL261 Intermediate Greek 1*<\/li>\n<li>Four courses in Classical Civilization and\/or Classical Languages (at or above the 200 level)\n<ul>\n<li>View Classical Civilization and\/or Classical Language courses<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/classics\/academics\/undergraduate-programs\/majors\/course-classifications\/\">here<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">*Note that CL161 and CL162 or their equivalent are prerequisites for enrollment in CL261, which is the third semester of ancient Greek<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Philosophy requirements:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>One of the following:\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>PH100 Introduction to Philosophy<\/li>\n<li>PH110 Great Philosophers<\/li>\n<li>PH150 Introduction to Ethics<\/li>\n<li>PH155 Politics and Philosophy<\/li>\n<li>PH160 Reason and Argumentation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>PH 300 History of Ancient Philosophy<\/li>\n<li>PH 310 History of Modern Philosophy<\/li>\n<li>Two courses in philosophy at the 200 level or above\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/philo\/academics\/courses\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Philosophy courses<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>One of the following:\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>PH403 Plato I<\/li>\n<li>PH405 Aristotle I<\/li>\n<li>PH406 Aristotle II<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Learning Outcomes:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Demonstrate a broad understanding of the history and culture of ancient Greece and Rome.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Read with comprehension works of ancient Greek and\/or Latin poetry and prose, either in the original or in English translation, demonstrating understanding of genre, style, and cultural context.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Communicate clearly and persuasively, both orally and in writing, ideas about the ancient world and its products.<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">Demonstrate an understanding of the influence of classical culture on other historical periods.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h6>Revised Fall 2023<\/h6>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In addition to the\u00a0general requirements\u00a0that all College of Arts and Science students must require, students with a major in Classics &amp; Philosophy must also complete the following requirements.
