This Bachelor\u2019s-to-Master\u2019s program allows students to apply a maximum of 8 credits from their undergraduate degree toward the associated master\u2019s degree. The credits applied toward the master\u2019s degree must be at the 500-level or above.<\/p>\n<p>Students must apply to Bachelor\u2019s-to-Master\u2019s Programs <em>before <\/em>the conferral of the bachelor\u2019s degree. Typically, students apply to the Classics &amp; Archaeology Bachelor\u2019s-to-Master\u2019s program in their 2<sup>nd<\/sup> or 3<sup>rd<\/sup> year of undergraduate study. Students in the Classics &amp; Archaeology Bachelor\u2019s to Master\u2019s Programs must complete at least 24 credits while enrolled as a graduate student.\u00a0 Students must complete all requirements for the BA in Classics &amp; Archaeology before completing the MA in Classics &amp; Archaeology.\u00a0 Students should consult with the Financial Assistance office to learn how entrance into the Bachelor\u2019s-to-Master\u2019s Program might impact their financial aid.<\/p>\n<p>The BA-to-MA in Classics &amp; Archaeology will enable students completing the BA in Classics &amp; Archaeology to sequentially pursue the MA in Classics &amp; Archaeology in a fifth year. It will give students training in Ancient Greek and Latin, archaeological methods and practices, and the study of ancient Mediterranean material culture. The degree is designed for students who hope to pursue a PhD in Archaeology, Ancient History, Art History, or Classics; to move into cognate humanistic fields; or to pursue employment in fields where knowledge of classical and Near Eastern antiquity is valuable, such as heritage management, historic preservation, publishing, tourism, and employment in museums, especially if students choose to couple the degree with the<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/academics\/grs\/programs\/museum-studies\/\">certificate in museum studies<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>(offered through the History of Art &amp; Architecture department).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Learning Outcomes<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>See individual learning outcomes for the BA program in:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/academics\/cas\/programs\/classical-studies\/ba-in-classics-archaeology\/\">Classics &amp; Archaeology<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Students with a Master of Art in Classics &amp; Archaeology will be able to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Demonstrate a broad understanding of the history and material culture of the ancient Mediterranean and Near East.<\/li>\n<li>Read with comprehension works of Ancient Greek and Latin writers and demonstrate an understanding of genre, style, and cultural context.<\/li>\n<li>Demonstrate an understanding of the material variety of the cultures of the ancient Mediterranean and Near East as well as their influence on peoples and places of subsequent historical periods.<\/li>\n<li>Communicate these understandings clearly and persuasively, both orally and in writing.<\/li>\n<li>Produce and defend an original contribution to knowledge.<\/li>\n<li>Conduct scholarly activities in an ethical manner.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h3 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Requirements<\/h3><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/p>\n<p>Prior to beginning the MA in Classics and Archaeology, students must complete all requirements for the BA in Classics and Archaeology. This includes the first four terms of both Ancient Greek and Latin.<\/p>\n<p>The following are the additional requirements for the MA in Classics and Archaeology. Any two of these courses may be taken during the BA, and count toward the MA:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Two courses in Ancient Greek or Latin above the 500 level.<\/li>\n<li>Three of the following four courses:\n<ul>\n<li>CAS AR 591<\/li>\n<li>CAS AR 593<\/li>\n<li>CAS AR 594<\/li>\n<li>CAS AR 595<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Three electives at the graduate level in consultation with an advisor.<\/li>\n<li>A master\u2019s project in Archaeology. This project should include original research or comprise examples of professional development, such as a conference poster, a course syllabus, a museum display plan, or a cultural heritage management plan. One elective may be a Directed Study for the purposes of completing the master\u2019s project.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The combined BA-MA degree comprises 38 courses (152 credits).\u00a0 All courses for the MA must be passed with a grade of B\u2013 or better.<\/p>\n<p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h3 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Application Process<\/h3><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/p>\n<p>Applications must be received by<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>April 1 of the junior year<\/strong>. If the application does not meet the deadline, a Request for Waiver of Application Deadline must be completed and signed by the department chair and submitted with an application. The applicant must include their BU transcript, two faculty recommendation letters, a writing sample (10 pages, usually drawn from previous coursework), a plan of study, and a personal statement describing the applicant\u2019s interest in the program.
