{"id":7213,"date":"2020-08-17T13:40:21","date_gmt":"2020-08-17T17:40:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/classics\/?page_id=7213"},"modified":"2025-05-28T13:05:42","modified_gmt":"2025-05-28T17:05:42","slug":"ba-ma-in-classical-studies","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/classics\/academics\/dual-degree-programs\/ba-ma-in-classical-studies\/","title":{"rendered":"BA\/MA in Classical Studies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Department of Classical Studies offers a Bachelor\u2019s-to-Master\u2019s program leading to the Bachelor of Arts (BA) and the Master of Arts (MA).\u00a0<em>Advanced-level study in one or both classical languages is required<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>This Bachelor\u2019s-to-Master\u2019s program is designed to allow undergraduates concentrating in Ancient Greek, Latin, or both to achieve advanced skills in language and critical methods by satisfying, in addition to undergraduate requirements, all requirements for the MA in Classical Studies. The program prepares students either for the teaching of Latin or Ancient Greek language, literature, and culture at the secondary level; or, if both ancient languages are studied, for the pursuit of a PhD in classics; or for advanced study in related humanistic fields.<\/p>\n<p>Bachelor\u2019s-to-Master\u2019s Programs are linked bachelor\u2019s and master\u2019s degree programs in which the two degrees are conferred sequentially. This Bachelor\u2019s-to-Master\u2019s program allows students to apply a maximum of 8 credits from their undergraduate degree\u00a0toward the\u00a0associated\u00a0master\u2019s degree.\u00a0The credits applied toward the master\u2019s degree must be at the 500-level or above.<\/p>\n<p>Students must apply to Bachelor\u2019s-to-Master\u2019s Programs\u00a0<em>before\u00a0<\/em>the conferral of the bachelor\u2019s degree. Typically, students apply to this Bachelor\u2019s-to-Master\u2019s program in their junior year. Students in this Bachelor\u2019s to Master\u2019s Programs must complete at least 24 credits while enrolled as a graduate student. Students must complete all requirements for the BA in Classics before completing the MA in Classics.\u00a0 Students should consult with the Financial Assistance office to learn how entrance into the Bachelor\u2019s-to-Master\u2019s Program might impact their financial aid.<\/p>\n<p>Learning Outcomes<\/p>\n<p>See individual learning outcomes for the BA programs in:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/academics\/cas\/programs\/classical-studies\/ba-ancient-greek\/\">Ancient Greek<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/academics\/cas\/programs\/classical-studies\/ba-ancient-greek-latin\/\">Ancient Greek &amp; Latin<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/academics\/cas\/programs\/classical-studies\/ba-latin\/\">Latin<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For the MA portion of the degrees, the learning outcomes are as follows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Demonstrate the ability to read standard texts in Ancient Greek and Latin with an understanding of idiom, nuance, and complex levels of meaning.<\/li>\n<li>Demonstrate mastery of a corpus of important texts in Ancient Greek and Latin, and of modern critical approaches to those texts.<\/li>\n<li>Conduct scholarly activities at a high level and in a professional and ethical manner.<\/li>\n<li>Teach classical subjects effectively at the undergraduate level.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><u>Application Procedure<\/u><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Applications must be received by\u00a0<strong>April 1 of the junior year<\/strong>. If the application does not meet the deadline, a Request for Waiver of Application Deadline must be completed and signed by the department chair and submitted with an application. The applicant must include their BU transcript, two faculty recommendation letters, a writing sample (10 pages, usually drawn from previous coursework), a plan of study, and a personal statement describing the applicant\u2019s interest in the program. The applicant must have an overall GPA of at least 3.0 to be considered for admission.<\/p>\n<p><em>For information on application and admission consult the Boston University College and Graduate School of Arts and Sciences admissions<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cas\/admissions\/\">website<\/a>.<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span><div class=\"bu_collapsible_container \" aria-live=\"polite\" data-customize-animation=\"false\"><h3 class=\"bu_collapsible\" aria-expanded=\"false\"tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\">Requirements<\/h3><div class=\"bu_collapsible_section\" style=\"display: none;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>All required courses for the Classical Studies BA\/MA programs are 4 unit hours.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>BA Requirements<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To fulfill the BA requirements, students must select\u00a0one of the following eligible Classical Studies BA\/MA program undergraduate majors and complete its requirements:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/academics\/cas\/programs\/classical-studies\/ba-ancient-greek\/\">Ancient Greek<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Ancient Greek &amp; Latin<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/academics\/cas\/programs\/classical-studies\/ba-latin\/\">Latin<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Note: Required BA courses are divided into four categories: classical civilization, Ancient Greek, Modern Greek, and Latin. Refer to the\u00a0<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/academics\/cas\/programs\/classical-studies\/\"><em>Classical Studies programs<\/em><\/a><em>\u00a0section of this Bulletin for the full list of courses and their categories that may be used to fulfill the requirements stated and for information on the CAS foreign language requirement for classics majors.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>MA in Classical Studies Requirements<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On the graduate level, students must complete the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/academics\/grs\/programs\/classical-studies\/ma\/\">requirements for the Graduate School of Arts &amp; Sciences (GRS) MA in Classical Studies<\/a>, which includes a minimum requirement of eight courses (32 units):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>CAS CL 530 or CAS CL 563<\/li>\n<li>Seven additional courses at or above the 500 level offered within the Department of Classical Studies or related departments\u00a0(with advisor approval)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Students may take any two of these M.A. courses (up to 8 credits) while completing the B.A., and count them toward the degree.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Students may choose to take graduate-level courses in Ancient Greek and Latin, but students may take only one set of qualifying exams, either two in Ancient Greek or two in Latin. One course in Greek or Roman art or classical archaeology is recommended. Students who wish to take more than two courses from related departments must receive approval from the Director of Graduate Studies.<\/p>\n<p>Students must satisfy an area requirement in either Greek or Roman history. This may be fulfilled in the following ways:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Taking one graduate-level course in Greek or Roman history<\/li>\n<li>Taking an undergraduate history course as a graduate directed study (2 units)<\/li>\n<li>Receiving a grade of Pass on an exam set by two evaluators appointed by the Director of Graduate Studies<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Master\u2019s students are also required to demonstrate, by written examination, proficiency in the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The translation of passages from either Greek or Latin<\/li>\n<li>The history of either Greek or Latin literature<\/li>\n<li>German or French (with consent of the department, another language may be substituted)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Please note:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Requirements for both the BA and MA can be completed with a minimum of 152 units.<\/li>\n<li>Graduate-level classes can be used to meet the CAS graduation requirement of a minimum of 32 courses.<\/li>\n<li>The usual completion time is five years.
