Liza Katz
Reunion
More penetrating
than assuming old shoes,
being here, he says, is like being
in a skin shed long ago.
For once we agree. My loose
lizard legs carry me
as if they (not I) know the way.
The scene surfacing before us
on the double door glass
is familiar, but his bride-to-be
is on his arm this time.
As we talk she places
a limp hand on his, or tugs
her clothing, or gnaws her hair
like a wild animal. Afterwards
he asks if I’ll drive them back
to the station, and I excuse
myself, feeling accountable,
or that I can step
into old skin and end this (I can’t).
