In this new role, Allison will be teaching in the Social Science and Human Inquiry department supporting sociology and anthropology, history, and philosophy, as well as interdisciplinary minors like environmental studies, disability studies, and museum studies.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
David Swartz<\/a>\"\"<\/a> (CAS\/Sociology) presented \u201cHow American Academic Trumpists use the Constitution\u201d at the Faculty of Law, Charles University in Prague earlier in May. The presentation was at a conference on\u00a0\u201cImpure: the impure science of law: constitutional scholars in democracy<\/a>\u201d\u00a0where he joined the discussion with several European professors of constitutional law (notably Jan Komarek, Sheila Jasanoff, Mattias Kumm, Paivi Leino-Sandberg, and Rob van Gestel) about problems of teaching and research in face of growing authoritarianism.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Yijun \u201cBetty\u201d Xie<\/a>\"\"<\/a>, CAS \u201926 (CISS 25-26 Undergraduate Research Intern) was<\/span>\u00a0awarded the <\/span>BU Center for the Humanities Digital Creators Awards<\/a> in the Game category for her work <\/span>\u201c<\/span>The Path Home<\/a>\u201d which centered on the founding and creation of an All-Black town and community set between the late 19th century and the early 20th century. Russell was a Baptist minister and professor emeritus of religion who joined Boston University in 1961 and devoted more than two decades to the study and teaching of American religious history. \"\"\"\"Boston University African Ajami team<\/a>, supported by Fallou Ngom<\/a> (CAS\/Anthropology)\u00a0and\u00a0Daivi Rodima-Taylor<\/a> (CAS\/Anthropology)\u00a0, has successfully concluded work on a multi-year project, Digital Preservation of Fuuta Jalon Scholars\u2019 Arabic and Ajami Materials in Senegal and Guinea<\/a>, funded by the Endangered Archives Programme<\/a> of the British Library<\/a>. This initiative has created the largest digital archive of Fuuta Jalon scholars\u2019 Arabic and Ajami manuscripts, preserving 49 collections and 52,415 pages, some dating back to the 18th century. The texts cover a broad range of religious, historical, and intellectual topics. The project has made these invaluable materials accessible to researchers, students, and the public worldwide, shedding new light on the rich intellectual traditions of the Fuuta Jalon region and providing key insights into the literacy and scholarship of enslaved Africans in the Americas.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Benjamin Sovacool<\/a>\"\"<\/a> (CAS\/Earth & Environment and director of the Institute on Global Sustainability) was selected by the United Nations\u2019 Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change<\/a> to help\u00a0<\/span>lead a major new report on climate change.<\/a>\u00a0Sovacool will be a coordinating lead author for the panel\u2019s Seventh Assessment Report.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

The $1500 awards are meant to support \u201cprojects that have a public-facing element or might plausibly have one in the future.\u201d Genna\u2019s supported dissertation project, recently also\u00a0<\/span>featured in BU\u2019s research magazine THE BRINK<\/a>, is entitled \u201cConstructing the Waterfront: Property, Power, and the Making of Modern Boston.\u201d Jesse, who currently holds a pre-doctoral fellow at the Smithsonian Institution, received support for her dissertation, \u201cPhotography\u2019s Other Workshops: Crafting Community Photojournalism in American High Schools, 1967-1989.\u201d<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/a>Heather Schoenfeld<\/a> (CAS\/Sociology & CISS Affiliate) was named a Russell Sage Foundation Visiting Scholar<\/a> for the 2025-2026 academic year.<\/span> While in residence at RSF in New York City, Schoenfeld (and\u00a0<\/span>Michael Campbell, <\/a>University of Denver) will examine factors that influenced states to reduce their prison populations in the first decade of the 21st century by investigating differences in prison reform activity across states. They will analyze the obstacles confronting reformers and the strategies they employed to overcome some of these challenges. Their research will consist of comparative case studies of six states: New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Illinois, Georgia, and Florida.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
The College of Arts & Sciences recently received a gift of $125,000 from Vita Paladino (SSW, ’93), former director of the Howard Gotlieb Archival Research Center<\/a>, to establish the Adelaide Cromwell Lecture Endowment, which will provide support for lectures, talks, and presentations within the African American Black & Diaspora Studies Program<\/a>. The gift was made in honor of Adelaide Cromwell (Hon., \u201995)<\/a>, a professor of sociology renowned for her research on black leadership who cofounded the University\u2019s African Studies Center in 1953, and the college\u2019s African American Studies program in 1969.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

While Christian antisemitism is well-studied, a stigma remains around addressing antisemitism in the Muslim world. Beyond this, relatively few scholars focus on the Middle Eastern dimensions of Christian antisemitism in religious and cultural terms, much less the political impacts in the West.<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Her dissertation research focuses on comparing the gut microbiomes of wild vervet monkeys living in three locations in South Africa. She is particularly interested in how the gut microbiome responds to various external influences, including diet, social interaction, and habitat type, and how these factors impact overall host health. Before attending Boston University, Jessica completed her B.S. (Honors) in Neuroscience and Behavior at Florida Atlantic University.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Through an ethnographic study of selected shrines, she hopes to explore why widows frequent shrines, what rituals do they participate in and how they interact with other women and men. The archives to be preserved in this project between May 2022 and May 2025 will be the largest digital records of such materials in the world. The archives will enhance scholars\u2019 understanding of how some enslaved Africans were educated and acquired Arabic and Ajami literacy skills before their captivity in the Americas.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

\"\"Robert (Bob) Hefner<\/a> (CAS\/Anthropology) attended the G20 Religion Forum (R20) in Nusa Dua, Bali, Indonesia. \u00a0The Religion 20 Forum was a special sub-meeting within the general G20 forum, announced as an \u201cInternational Summit of Religious Leaders\u201d and entitled, \u201cRevealing Nurturing Religion as a Source of Global Solutions: An International Movement for Shared Moral and Spiritual Values.\u201d \u00a0 The forum brought together some 220 religious leaders and policy analysts from all faith traditions and more than sixty countries. \u00a0Hefner attended at the official invitation of KH Yahya Cholil Staquf, the executive director of Nahdlatul Ulama (NU). \u00a0With the Ministry of Religious Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia, NU was the host and organizer of the R20. \u00a0Hefner participated in the plenary sessions drafting R20 documents. \u00a0On the last night of the conference, he also gave the keynote dinner presentation on, \u201cIndonesia, the R20, and the Role of Religion in Global Well-being.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

In this book, Ammerman examines religious practices in places of worship and in everyday life. She works to define a lived religion, providing a sociological lense and analysis framework.
