{"id":40718,"date":"2024-03-11T12:07:39","date_gmt":"2024-03-11T16:07:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cise\/?post_type=profile&#038;p=40718"},"modified":"2024-03-15T11:41:19","modified_gmt":"2024-03-15T15:41:19","slug":"tianyu-wang","status":"publish","type":"profile","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cise\/profile\/tianyu-wang\/","title":{"rendered":"Tianyu Wang"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"s3\"><span class=\"s5\">Professor Wang\u2019s research <\/span><span class=\"s5\">aims to harness<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> the comput<\/span><span class=\"s5\">ational <\/span><span class=\"s5\">power from <\/span><span class=\"s5\">optical physics<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> for the purpose of developing more efficient <\/span><span class=\"s5\">sensors and processors<\/span><span class=\"s5\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s3\"><span class=\"s5\">Traditionally<\/span><span class=\"s5\">, light <\/span><span class=\"s5\">primarily <\/span><span class=\"s5\">serves as a medium for transmitting information<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> in applications such as imaging and telecommunication<\/span><span class=\"s5\">, yet its <\/span><span class=\"s5\">potential for information processing has attracted more attention recently. For example, <\/span><span class=\"s5\">light propagation <\/span><span class=\"s5\">can perform large-scale linear operations efficiently, <\/span><span class=\"s5\">positioning it as a promising platform for artificial neural network implementation<\/span><span class=\"s5\">. Furthermore, by processing optical data natively in the optical domain, <\/span><span class=\"s5\">we can <\/span><span class=\"s5\">improve the performance of optical sensors in multiple dimensions, <\/span><span class=\"s5\">including but not limited to their<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> latency, data throughput rate, and sensitivity. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s3\"><span class=\"s5\">Prof. Wang\u2019s lab work<\/span><span class=\"s5\">s<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> on both hardware and software development at three different levels: 1) <\/span><span class=\"s5\">D<\/span><span class=\"s5\">iscover new forms of optical information processing advantages in conju<\/span><span class=\"s5\">nction<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> with emerging computational models and photonic devices. 2) <\/span><span class=\"s5\">Develop<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> hardware systems that showcase the practical benefits of optical processing<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> in applications such as <\/span><span class=\"s5\">high-throughput biomedical assays, remote sensing, and high-speed feedback controls. 3) <\/span><span class=\"s5\">Apply <\/span><span class=\"s5\">artificial intelligence techniques<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> for adaptive self-configuration of photonic computing, sensing, and imaging systems.<\/span><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"s6\"><span class=\"s5\">Prior to joining Boston University, Professor Wang was a recipient of the Eric and Wendy Schmidt AI in Science Postdoctoral Fellowship. He received his PhD degree in Applied Physics <\/span><span class=\"s5\">from<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> Cornell University<\/span><span class=\"s5\">, with a minor <\/span><span class=\"s5\">concentration on<\/span><span class=\"s5\"> Biomedical Engineering<\/span><span class=\"s5\">.
