Guo\u2019s research was also recognized with the Best Paper Award in CISE\u2019s 2025 Best Student Paper Competition for his paper, \u201cConstraint-Conditioned Actor-Critics for Offline Safe Reinforcement Learning.\u201d This prestigious award recognizes the scientific quality and impact of research conducted by CISE students.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_41720\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-41720\" style=\"width: 255px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/cise\/files\/2024\/12\/headshot.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"245\" height=\"215\" class=\" wp-image-41720\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cise\/files\/2024\/12\/headshot.jpg 2539w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cise\/files\/2024\/12\/headshot-636x557.jpg 636w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cise\/files\/2024\/12\/headshot-1024x897.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cise\/files\/2024\/12\/headshot-768x673.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cise\/files\/2024\/12\/headshot-1536x1346.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cise\/files\/2024\/12\/headshot-2048x1795.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 245px) 100vw, 245px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-41720\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Zijian Guo, PhD Candidate (SE)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Guo is developing AI systems that can reason, adapt, and avoid failure in dynamic, real-world environments.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMy research focuses on safe and generalizable decision-making,\u201d Guo said. \u201cI integrate formal methods, such as linear temporal logic, with reinforcement learning to enable agents to achieve complex tasks safely and adapt effectively to new ones.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Traditional reinforcement learning methods often struggle to handle tasks with complex temporal and logical structure and tend to generalize poorly to novel scenarios. Guo\u2019s approach combines RL with temporal logic to create systems that can generalize behaviors across a wide range of tasks and safety needs in dynamic settings, which is especially important for safety-critical applications such as autonomous vehicles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Through the fellowship, Guo plans to scale up his research.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAttending conferences means I can meet other researchers and learn from their work. In this area, it&#8217;s about collaborations and communications.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He also credited his advisor, Li, for helping guide the direction of his work. \u201cProfessor Li is an expert in formal methods and trustworthy AI,\u201d Guo said. \u201cThat background helped me see how we could use logic to guide learning and make AI more reliable.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Guo\u2019s long-term goal is to make AI systems more adaptable and resilient in the face of change.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMost RL models are trained for one specific task or a set of tasks,\u201d he said. \u201cBut in the real world, things are always changing. My goal is to make these models more flexible so they can keep up without starting from scratch every time.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Guo said the fellowship is both a milestone and a launchpad. \u201cIt feels like a real commitment to my research,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s motivating me to keep pushing forward.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As artificial intelligence continues to shape everything from autonomous cars to home robotics, one Boston University PhD candidate is working to ensure that these systems not only function but also work safely.
