CISE Affiliate, Professor Vivek K Goyal (ECE) receives the prestigious 2022 AAAS Fellowship.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

CISE faculty affiliate Vivek K Goyal<\/a>\u00a0was named a 2022 fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS ).\u00a0One of the most prestigious honors for a U.S. scientist, AAAS Fellows are elected in a highly competitive review process conducted by their academic peers in recognition of their distinguished contributions to the advancement of science or its applications.<\/p>\n

Goyal is Professor and Associate Chair of Doctoral Programs for the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at Boston University College of Engineering. He\u00a0specializes in signal processing, with a recent emphasis on computational imaging, especially the exploitation of efficient information representations and the development of new imaging modalities that are dependent on computation.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n

Goyal is broadly recognized for his many contributions in the fields of signal processing and information science, from his highly-cited paper “<\/span>Multiple description coding: Compression meets the network<\/a>“<\/span> to his 2014 paper published in <\/span>Science<\/i><\/a> in which he establishes the field of depth imaging from extremely low light levels\u2014as little as one photon detected per pixel\u2014 to continuing to advance new knowledge and innovations in microscopy,\u00a0non-line-of-sight imaging,<\/a>\u00a0and other\u00a0lidar<\/a> and thermal<\/a> sensing and ranging technologies for autonomous vehicles.<\/span><\/p>\n

Goyal has published more than 200 papers and co-authored a textbook (Foundations of Signal Processing, Cambridge University Press 2014). He is the recipient of several awards, including the 2002 IEEE Signal Processing Society (SPS) Magazine Award,\u00a0 2017 IEEE SPS Best Paper Award, 2019 IEEE SPS Best Paper Award,<\/a> 2021 IEEE SPS Outstanding Editorial Board Member, and the Best Paper Award of the 2014 IEEE International Conference on Image Processing. Additionally, work he supervised has received seven student best paper or poster awards,\u00a0 seven thesis awards, including the 2021 IEEE SPS Best PhD Dissertation Award<\/a>, and a CRA Outstanding Undergraduate Research Award Honorable Mention.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

He is also a Fellow of the IEEE and of Optica (formerly OSA).<\/span><\/p>\n

Goyal serves on the editorial boards of IEEE Open Journal of Signal Processing, IEEE Transactions on Computational Imaging, SIAM Journal on Imaging Sciences, and Foundations and Trends in Signal Processing. He co-chaired the SPIE Wavelets & Sparsity conference series 2006 to 2016. He has been a plenary speaker at various international conferences, including the IEEE Data Compression Conference in 2009, the IEEE International Workshop on Multimedia Signal Processing in 2009, and the 20th European Signal Processing Conference in 2012.\u00a0 He served as an IEEE Signal Processing Society (SPS) Distinguished Lecturer 2017-2018.<\/span><\/p>\n
