{"id":34179,"date":"2021-06-17T15:06:46","date_gmt":"2021-06-17T19:06:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cise\/?p=34179"},"modified":"2021-09-21T16:47:51","modified_gmt":"2021-09-21T20:47:51","slug":"the-sensor-you-swallow","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cise\/the-sensor-you-swallow\/","title":{"rendered":"The Sensor You Swallow"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Thanks to the work of Assistant Professor Rabia Yazicigil (ECE) and her colleagues at MIT, Crohn\u2019s and other bowel disease sufferers might someday skip the arduous annual endoscopy and instead swallow a pill-sized device that would literally shed light on what\u2019s going on inside the gastrointestinal (GI) tract.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/chandrakasan.mit.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MIT researchers<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/science.sciencemag.org\/content\/360\/6391\/915.abstract\">previously developed<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>a 1.5-inch capsule that contained a computer chip, a wireless transmitter and genetically engineered bacteria that light up when they come in contact with blood. The capsule could detect bleeding in the GI tract and send an alert to a smart phone.<\/p>\n<p>Yazicigil and her students at Boston University\u2019s Wireless Integrated Systems and Extreme Circuits (WISE-Circuits) Laboratory, in collaboration with MIT, have decreased the capsule\u2019s size to about that of a chickpea by designing an ultra-sensitive, nanowatt-level power, integrated photodetector and readout system on a chip. This transformative size reduction makes this smart pill much safer as it passes through the digestive system.<\/p>\n<p>The team presented its proof of concept at the 2021 Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Custom Integrated Circuits Conference this past spring. The project\u2019s principal investigators are Yazicigil and MIT researchers<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rle.mit.edu\/sbg\/\">Timothy Lu<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>and Giovanni Traverso. Yazicigil\u2019s PhD student Qijun Liu presented<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ieeexplore.ieee.org\/document\/9431409\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the paper<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>at the IEEE event.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_28472\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-28472\" style=\"width: 308px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/cise\/files\/2020\/10\/Screen-Shot-2020-10-31-at-11.27.20-AM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"298\" height=\"294\" class=\"wp-image-28472 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cise\/files\/2020\/10\/Screen-Shot-2020-10-31-at-11.27.20-AM.png 298w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cise\/files\/2020\/10\/Screen-Shot-2020-10-31-at-11.27.20-AM-100x100.png 100w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 298px) 100vw, 298px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-28472\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Rabia Yazicigil (ECE)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>About three million adults in the U.S. suffer from inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), such as Crohn\u2019s or ulcerative colitis. These conditions can cause severe diarrhea, fatigue, weight loss and malnutrition, and they increase the risk of colon cancer.<\/p>\n<p>Doctors can search the GI tract for warning signs with a colonoscopy, but that only happens every year or two, and the preparation is not pleasant. Moreover, says Yazicigil, \u201can endoscopy is an image-based system\u2014it doesn\u2019t really measure the molecular disease biomarkers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A stool sample does measure biomarkers, or it should\u2014but some of the most important biomarkers have degraded or have been absorbed by the time they exit the system, so the test fails to pick up on them.<\/p>\n<p>The ingestible monitors are noninvasive\u2014the application would be as simple as swallowing a pill\u2014and they monitor the gut in real time. The bacterial sensors light up when they sense their target biomarkers; a chip converts this bioluminescence into electrical signals; and the data is sent to a nearby smart phone or tablet. \u201cThink of this gadget as a wearable, but for inside the body,\u201d says Yazicigil.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment108212\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment108212\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\">\n<p><figure id=\"attachment_34184\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-34184\" style=\"width: 288px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/cise\/files\/2021\/06\/Qijun-Lu.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"278\" height=\"333\" class=\"wp-image-34184 size-full\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-34184\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Qijun Liu<\/figcaption><\/figure><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment108212\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The primary challenge confronting BU\u2019s WISE-Circuits Lab was the device\u2019s power consumption. To conserve power, they designed a chip that switches on every 10 minutes for 16 seconds to take measurements, and for a mere 12 milliseconds to transmit the data.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat discrete time approach rather than a continuous time approach saves us some power,\u201d says Liu, the ENG PhD student.<\/p>\n<p>The WISE-Circuits Lab team, working with the group at MIT who originated the capsule, have done in vitro testing of the streamlined version and are planning in vivo testing in animal models. \u201cIn vivo testing is critical for safety, and previous attempts with off-the-shelf components and large batteries made devices too large to be safe,\u201d says Miguel Jimenez, research scientist at MIT. \u201cThe Yazicigil group\u2019s custom, low-power design is an elegant solution to this challenge.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The project has been a true cross-disciplinary collaboration, including efforts by the groups at MIT to encase the monitor in a semipermeable coating that protects the bacteria from the harsh GI environment while allowing in the target biomarkers.
