{"id":28544,"date":"2020-10-31T12:11:24","date_gmt":"2020-10-31T17:11:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cise\/?p=28544"},"modified":"2021-09-07T13:08:14","modified_gmt":"2021-09-07T17:08:14","slug":"cise-se-students-at-ghc-2020","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cise\/cise-se-students-at-ghc-2020\/","title":{"rendered":"CISE-SE Students at GHC 2020"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><\/em>The Center for Information and Systems Engineering (CISE) and the Division of Systems Engineering (SE) sponsored seven students to represent the College of Engineering at this year\u2019s Grace Hopper Celebration (September 26-October 3). The event aims to nurture the research and career paths of women finding inspiration in its annual commemoration of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/news.yale.edu\/2017\/02\/10\/grace-murray-hopper-1906-1992-legacy-innovation-and-service\">Grace Murray Hopper<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>(1906 \u2013 1992). Dr. Hopper was a pioneer in the field of computer programming and systems engineering, whose many achievements included inventing the first computer language compiler, which was later incorporated into COBOL.<\/p>\n<p>Attending this year\u2019s virtual event were Clara Lin (SE), Penny Kiourti (ECE), Rui Liu (SE),\u00a0 Xiaoyu Li (SE), Prachi Shukla (CE), Qianqian Ma (ECE), and Samantha Puterman (CE). These women had the opportunity to network, increase visibility in their respective disciplines, engage in discourse with prominent professionals in diverse science, research and technology disciplines.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/systems\/files\/2020\/10\/Screen-Shot-2020-11-01-at-2.25.23-PM.png\" class=\"alignleft\" width=\"154\" height=\"160\" \/> <strong>Clara Lin\u00a0<\/strong><span>is\u00a0a 4th year Ph.D. candidate in Systems Engineering working with\u00a0Professor Sean Andersson (ME, SE) in the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/robotics\/\">BU Robotics Lab<\/a><span>.\u00a0Her\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.claralin.com\/?cat=3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">research<\/a><span>\u00a0is focused on Single Particle Tracking.\u00a0 At GHC, Lin presented a poster entitled, S<\/span><em>imultaneous Localization and Parameter Estimation for Single Particle Tracking in Confined Environments<\/em><span>.\u00a0 \u201cAs a presenter, I benefitted from more people knowing about my research, and I got inspiration from them,\u201d says Lin.\u00a0\u201cWhat impressed me most was the powerful connection GHC gave. It provided the means to directly talk with people working in a variety of universities, communities, and companies. I also learned a lot of from the personal lessons shared by senior women in technology.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/systems\/files\/2020\/10\/pkiourti.jpg\" width=\"154\" height=\"162\" class=\"alignleft\" \/><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Penny Kiourti\u00a0<\/strong><span>is a 3rd-year Ph.D. student in the ECE department working with Professor Wenchao Li (ECE, SE) in the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/sites.bu.edu\/depend\/\">Dependable Computing Lab<\/a><span>. Her\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pkiourti.github.io\/\">research<\/a><span>\u00a0is primarily on the security aspect of Machine Learning systems. Says\u00a0 Kiourti, \u201cI was able to get productivity, career, and wellness advice, as well as interview preparation tips. I also had access to information about companies as they shared guidelines and information on how to apply and prepare for jobs. This event also supports and promotes all underrepresented groups in a positive way.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/systems\/files\/2020\/10\/Screen-Shot-2020-11-01-at-4.00.04-PM.png\" width=\"153\" height=\"157\" class=\"alignleft\" \/><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Prachi Shukla <\/strong><span>is a 4th year Ph.D. student in Computer Engineering \u00a0working with Professor Ayse Coskun (ECE) in the\u00a0Performance and Ene<\/span><span>rgy-Aware Computing\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/peaclab\/\">(PEAC) Lab<\/a><span>. The focus of her\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.prachi-shukla.com\/\">research<\/a><span>\u00a0is in energy-efficient computing, 3D architectures, thermal management, EDA development.\u00a0 Of GHC, Shukla\u00a0shares,<\/span><strong>\u00a0\u201c<\/strong><span>It was exciting to hear from women leaders from companies such as IBM or Intel talk about their leadership roles in building ch<\/span>ips and supercomputers. GHC also offered some great workshops\/sessions such as effective code review or open source, which helped me understand how I can efficiently collaborate, which is a very important skill. There were other sessions on diversity and equity, which I liked and found educational. The keynotes leave you feeling inspired and motivated to excel in your own field.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/systems\/files\/2020\/10\/Screen-Shot-2020-11-01-at-2.37.42-PM.png\" alt=\"\" class=\" wp-image-29307 alignleft\" width=\"149\" height=\"143\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/systems\/files\/2020\/10\/Screen-Shot-2020-11-01-at-2.37.42-PM.png 568w, http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/systems\/files\/2020\/10\/Screen-Shot-2020-11-01-at-2.37.42-PM-312x300.png 312w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 149px) 100vw, 149px\" \/>Rui Liu,\u00a0<\/strong><span>whose advisor is Professor Alex Olshevsky (ECE, SE), says,\u00a0\u201cI look forward to applying my research into industry and found the career sessions of GHC awesome.\u00a0 They gave me an opportunity to communicate and build relationships with women in high-tech who have similar research and career interests with me. About GHC, Li\u00a0says, \u201cIt is great to learn from different women who share their experiences and power.\u00a0 During the Amazon\u2019s SDE session, I got several professional instructions on the resume and interview. In addition, I was told that there would be an extended virtual career fair in November, and I am looking forward to it!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/systems\/files\/2020\/10\/IMG_6757.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-29338 alignleft\" width=\"131\" height=\"131\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/systems\/files\/2020\/10\/IMG_6757.jpg 873w, http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/systems\/files\/2020\/10\/IMG_6757-300x300.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/systems\/files\/2020\/10\/IMG_6757-150x150.jpg 150w, http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/systems\/files\/2020\/10\/IMG_6757-768x768.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/systems\/files\/2020\/10\/IMG_6757-100x100.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 149px) 100vw, 149px\" \/>Qianqian Ma,<\/strong><span>\u00a0whose advisor is Professor\u00a0Alex Olshevsky\u00a0(ECE, SE), is a 4th year Ph.D. in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Her\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sites.google.com\/a\/bu.edu\/qianqianma\/\">research<\/a><span> is focused on\u00a0machine learning and distributed optimization.\u00a0\u00a0\u201cAt GHC, some excellent women engineers and scientists shared their true experiences and thoughts about their careers as well as their lives.\u00a0 I have learned a lot from this. The focus of her\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/samanthapg\">research<\/a>\u00a0is Advancing Automated Distributed Tracing in the Cloud. Puterman\u00a0says, \u201cGHC was very helpful for networking and learning about new technologies and personal development. There is a big community of women in STEM who are trying to promote and achieve great things. What impacted me the most was knowing that though women are underrepresented in STEM disciplines, there are lots of resources, students and professionals open and excited to help each other succeed in their own career paths.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>These students were selected to represent the College of Engineering based on an application process announced by CISE and SE on September 1st, 2020.
