This year\u2019s event, held January 17th<sup><span>\u00a0<\/span><\/sup>at Boston University, was a spectacular day highlighting the caliber and diversity of research being conducted by our graduate students. Through a competitive submissions process, 20 PhD students were selected to present their original research. Following the\u00a0 presentations, a reception was held at The Castle where students were awarded Best Presenters by event attendees through a vetted voting process.\u00a0Close to 100 students, faculty, alumni, and industry guests attended CGSW this year.<\/p>\n<h2>CGSW 6.0 Best Presenter Awards<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment24326\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment24326\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\">\n<p><figure id=\"attachment_24326\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-24326\" style=\"width: 306px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/systems\/files\/2019\/02\/CGSW_2019_0932-450x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-24326\" width=\"296\" height=\"197\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/systems\/files\/2019\/02\/CGSW_2019_0932-450x300.jpg 450w, http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/systems\/files\/2019\/02\/CGSW_2019_0932-768x512.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/systems\/files\/2019\/02\/CGSW_2019_0932-1024x683.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-24326\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">For the second year in a row, Arian Houshmand takes first place as CGSW Best Presenter.<\/figcaption><\/figure><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment24326\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3><strong>Best Presenter<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Arian Houshman<\/strong><strong>d:<\/strong><span>\u00a0<\/span>\u201c<em>Eco-Routing and Scheduling of Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CAV)\u201d<span>\u00a0<\/span><\/em>(Advisor: Christos Cassandras). Arian\u2019s research presentation focused on how CAVs can increase the energy efficiency of our daily commute by\u00a0making collaborative decisions. Using a game theoretic approach, he assigns socially optimal routes to CAVs to minimize the total energy consumption of all vehicles. William presented the HotFuzz framework, which he<span>\u00a0<\/span>developed in collaboration with students from Boston University and<span>\u00a0<\/span>Northeastern University. Additionally, he presented evaluation results<span>\u00a0<\/span>that demonstrate micro-fuzzing as an effective approach for detecting AC vulnerabilities in real-world software.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>3rd Place<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Athar Roshandelpoor:<span>\u00a0<\/span><\/strong>\u201c<em>Bayesian Optimization for New Materials Development<\/em>\u201d (Advisor: Pirooz Vakili).\u00a0\u00a0<strong><\/strong>Athar presented Bayesian optimization, including Gaussian Process, and the Expected Improvement, and the advantages of their application in guiding experimentation in new materials design and development.<\/p>\n<h3>Industry guest speakers from Philips and IBM<\/h3>\n<p>Attendees of CGSW 6.0 also learned about important areas of research underway at Philips and IBM.\u00a0<strong>Amir Tahmasebi,\u00a0<\/strong>Technical Team Lead and Senior Research Scientist, Philips Research, presented on<span>\u00a0<\/span><em>\u201cMachine\u00a0 Intelligence for Healthcare\u201d.\u00a0<\/em><strong>Soumyadip Ghosh,\u00a0<\/strong>Research Staff Member, IBM, presented on \u201c<em>On Stochastic Gradient Descent for Distribut<\/em><em>ionally Robust Learning<\/em><em>\u201c<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Phenomenal\u00a0Cross-disciplinary Event developed by CGSW 6.0\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Student Organizers<\/strong><\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment24320\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment24320\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\">\n<p><figure id=\"attachment_24320\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-24320\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/systems\/files\/2019\/02\/CGSW_2019_0010-450x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-24320\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/systems\/files\/2019\/02\/CGSW_2019_0010-450x300.jpg 450w, http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/systems\/files\/2019\/02\/CGSW_2019_0010-768x512.jpg 768w, http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/systems\/files\/2019\/02\/CGSW_2019_0010-1024x683.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-24320\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">CGSW 6.0 Student Organizers (from left) Noushin Mehdipour, Artin Spiridonoff, and Eric Cooper<\/figcaption><\/figure><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment24320\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>CGSW 6.0\u00a0Student Organizers \u2013\u00a0<strong>Eric Cooper (Math\/Stats), Noushin Mehdipour (SE), and Artin Spiridonoff (SE) \u2013\u00a0<\/strong>developed a phenomenal<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/systems\/cgsw-6-0-agenda\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span>\u00a0<\/span>CGSW 6.0 Agenda<\/a>\u00a0 that brought together students and faculty from a\u00a0variety\u00a0of disciplines, promoting cross-disciplinary communication and an enjoyable opportunity to socialize among students, faculty, industry guests, and alumni.<\/p>\n<p>The CGSW 6.0 research agenda focused on current themes in Imaging, Network Security, Machine Learning, Optimization, and Autonomous Vehicles. Student presenters from Electrical &amp; Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics, and Systems Engineering participated.<\/p>\n<p><strong>About the CISE Graduate Student Workshop (CGSW)<\/strong><br \/>\n<span>Organized by students, for students, the CISE Graduate Student Workshop (CGSW) is a day-long, annual event that encourages interdisciplinary sharing among CISE students and CISE faculty affiliates across diverse application areas. CGSW gives participants the opportunity to share their research and hone their presentation skills in an engaging, collaborative environment.
