This year\u2019s event, held January 15th<sup>\u00a0<\/sup>at Boston University, was a spectacular day highlighting the caliber and diversity of research being conducted by our graduate students.<\/p>\n<p>Organized by students for students, CGSW provides a forum for students to share their original research and hone their communication skills. \u00a0This year\u2019s symposium offered participating students the opportunity to compete for a Best Paper or Best Presenter award, with various<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cise\/programs\/student-programs\/cgsw-2\/cgsw-7-0-submissions-call-for-papers-call-for-abstracts-dec-24th\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">criteria<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>taken into consideration in the selection of candidates. The event also included three<span>\u00a0<\/span>plenary industry speakers from A<strong>mazon, MIT Lincoln Laboratory<\/strong> and start-up <strong>Optimus Ride<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is an important event for our PhD candidates,\u201d says CISE Director, Professor Yannis Paschalidis (ECE, SE, BME).\u00a0 \u201cDeveloping an ability to effectively communicate your research results is quite important, affecting how widely they will be adopted and their eventual impact. It is particularly hard to do when speaking to people outside one\u2019s discipline. The goal of this event is to provide students with the opportunity to practice these communication skills in a comfortable and fun atmosphere.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Adds Christos Cassandras, Head of the Division of Systems Engineering and Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, \u201cHaving followed this (CGSW event) over the years, I am impressed at how it has improved in terms of presentation quality by our students.\u00a0 I personally found it more intellectually rewarding than sessions in some of our conferences.\u00a0I also thought that the inclusion of three plenaries from local industry was a great idea \u2013 not only were the talks very informative but they also provide a networking opportunity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span>CGSW 7.0 student research presentations were held at the BU Photonics Center followed by an award reception that evening at the BU Castle. <strong>CISE thanks the CGSW 7.0 Student Organizer team for putting together a terrific event:\u00a0 Andrew Cutler\u00a0(PhD ECE candidate),\u00a0Arian Houshmand\u00a0(PhD SE candidate), \u00a0Zihuan Qiao\u00a0(PhD Statistics candidate),\u00a0Zachary Serlin\u00a0(PhD ME candidate).<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Best Paper Award Winners<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>First Place \u2013 Zachary Serlin\u00a0<\/strong>(Advisor: Calin Belta)\u00a0<em>Li, X., Serlin, Z.,Yang, G., &amp; Belta, C.
