Photo by Above Summit for Boston University Photography<\/p>\n<div class=\"container-words-outer\">\n<div class=\"container-words-inner\">\n<p><span class=\"wp-prepress-tag\">AIR POLLUTION &amp; COVID-19<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"deck\">BU researchers say emissions went down almost instantly, amidst the coronavirus pandemic, after Governor Baker issued a statewide stay-at-home advisory<\/h4>\n<p>Since last month, as daily commuters and city dwellers began sheltering at home to slow the spread of the coronavirus that has infected more than 2 million people globally, the morning rush hour traffic typical of American cities has virtually disappeared. And Boston University researchers say it\u2019s caused the air in the city to become cleaner, almost instantly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is absolutely real,\u201d says CISE faculty affiliate\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/earth\/profiles\/lucy-hutyra\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lucy Hutyra<\/a>, a BU College of Arts &amp; Sciences associate professor of earth and environment who monitors carbon emissions and air pollutants around Boston and the state of Massachusetts. Over the last month, since Governor Charlie Baker issued a stay-at-home advisory on March 23, Hutyra has continued tracking air quality using traffic data from the Massachusetts Department of Transportation, as well as air sensors her team has placed around the BU Charles River Campus and the city of Boston. She has been looking at how many cars are on the road in two locations, one in Newton and the other at the intersection of I-495 and I-95, finding a 50 to 60 percent decrease in traffic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s as if I magically implemented our most ambitious emissions reduction policies,\u201d says Hutyra. \u201cThat drop is astounding.\u201d Along with plummeting emissions from traffic, carbon emissions in Boston overall have fallen by an estimated 15 percent, following a pattern observed\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/grist.org\/climate\/coronavirus-could-cause-the-first-big-emissions-drop-in-a-decade\/?utm_source=newsletter&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=weekly&amp;utm_content=%5B%5Bpost.post_title%5D%5D%3Futm_medium%3Demail\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">around the world<\/a> in areas where people have sheltered in place to avoid infection with COVID-19.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/files\/2020\/04\/Resize-Geddes_graphic-933x1024.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-257541 aligncenter\" width=\"454\" height=\"498\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/files\/2020\/04\/Resize-Geddes_graphic-933x1024.png 933w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/files\/2020\/04\/Resize-Geddes_graphic-580x636.png 580w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/files\/2020\/04\/Resize-Geddes_graphic-768x843.png 768w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/files\/2020\/04\/Resize-Geddes_graphic-911x1000.png 911w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/files\/2020\/04\/Resize-Geddes_graphic-600x658.png 600w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/files\/2020\/04\/Resize-Geddes_graphic-900x988.png 900w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/files\/2020\/04\/Resize-Geddes_graphic.png 1058w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 454px) 100vw, 454px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This graph shows direct measurements of nitrogen oxide (NO2) concentrations at ground-level taken from Kenmore Square in Boston, Mass. Geddes analyzed these observations and created the graph using publically available data from the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/outdoor-air-quality-data\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Environmental Protection Agency\u00a0<\/a>and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/openaq.org\/#\/?_k=r4pub7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">OpenAQ<\/a>. Measurements indicate that, after the stay-at-home advisory on March 23, NO2 concentrations are significantly down compared to the same time in the previous few years.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>This gives us a taste of what our emissions might look like if we managed to convert our vehicle fleet to clean electricity, or if traditional commuters found other ways of getting into the city or working from home without relying on emissions from their own individual tailpipes,\u201d says<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/earth\/profiles\/jeffrey-geddes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jeff Geddes<\/a>, a BU College of Arts &amp; Sciences assistant professor of earth and environment. He tracks reactive nitrogen oxides, an indicator of fossil fuel combustion activities largely due to commuter traffic and trucks, which are a key ingredient of the atmospheric chemistry that leads to smog. Despite admitting that it\u2019s an emotionally challenging time to run these types of experiments, Geddes has continued his work throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, finding that traffic-related emissions of nitrogen dioxide have gone down by at least 50 percent compared to this time last year in Boston.<\/p>\n<p>Because nitrogen oxide is associated with fossil fuel combustion, its presence in the air is an indicator of other dangerous, and often unmeasured, pollutants such as ultrafine particles and toxic organic compounds, which have also<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/2020\/03\/28\/metro\/while-world-retreats-coronavirus-nature-catches-its-breath\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">decreased<\/a>. It\u2019s hard to say what this means for the long term, but \u201cas monitoring continues, and we gather evidence across a variety of platforms, including satellite measurements, we should be able to draw further insights,\u201d Geddes says.<\/p>\n<p>Hutyra points out that emissions will likely bounce back to their original levels like they have after past crises that have similarly brought the world to a standstill, like the Great Recession in 2009 and the September 11 terrorist attacks in 2001.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis isn\u2019t enough to have a long-term effect since we haven\u2019t structurally changed anything that would reduce CO2 emissions in the long run, but it depends on what comes next,\u201d says Hutyra, who plans to continue watching how people get themselves around the city. \u201cI\u2019m sure there will be people who discover they can work from home more, start riding bicycles, and some people who might never get on public transportation again.\u201d<\/p>\n<section class=\"wp-prepress-taxonomy-list\"><i>Originally published in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/articles\/2020\/no-its-not-your-imagination-the-air-in-boston-is-cleaner\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Brink<\/a>\u00a0on April 16, 2020<\/i><\/section>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A massive reduction in rush hour traffic has reduced carbon and nitrogen emissions in Boston.
