Pardee Center for the Study of the Longer-Range Future co-sponsored the\u00a0BU Conference on Sustainability Research on Monday, May 9. Approximately 100 people attended the one-day conference that featured presentations by Boston University faculty with a diverse\u00a0range of expertise on their research related to sustainability issues (a full list of presenters can be viewed below). Each of the four sessions \u2014 which focused on\u00a0measuring sustainability, modeling sustainability, human dimensions of sustainability, and future sustainability \u2014 took an interdisciplinary approach, and the discussion throughout the day explored\u00a0sustainability challenges and solutions through ecological, economic, societal, and technological lenses, among others. The conference was webcast and can be viewed <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardee\/2016\/04\/20\/upcoming-bu-conference-on-sustainability-research\/\"><span class=\"s2\"><b>here<\/b><\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/cise\/files\/2016\/06\/SustainabilityResearchConf_0810-1024x683-450x300.jpg\" alt=\"SustainabilityResearchConf\" width=\"450\" height=\"300\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-19476\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Following opening remarks by Pardee Center Director Anthony Janetos and College of Arts and Sciences Dean Ann Cudd, Prof.\u00a0Lucy Hutyra (Earth and Environment) moderated the first session on measuring sustainability. Panelists included <b>Prof. Nathan Phillips<\/b> (Earth and Environment, Systems Engineering), Prof. Pam Templer (Biology), <b>Prof. Michael Gevelber<\/b> (Mechanical Engineering, Systems Engineering, Materials Science &amp; Engineering), and <b>Prof. Thomas Little<\/b> (Electrical and Computer Engineering, Systems Engineering). Topics included measuring local and regional\u00a0energy\u00a0use, carbon storage, commercial buildings energy use, and smart lighting technology.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The second session, moderated by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/sustainability\/\"><span class=\"s2\">BU Sustainability<\/span><\/a> Director Dennis Carlberg, focused on modeling sustainability. Prof. Peter Fox-Penner (Questrom) gave an overview of\u00a0his\u00a0newly created <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/ise\/\"><span class=\"s2\">Institute for Sustainable Energy<\/span><\/a> and Prof. Kevin Gallagher (Global Development Policy) spoke about his research on climate change, trade, and finance conducted\u00a0at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardeeschool\/research\/gegi\/\"><span class=\"s2\">Global Economic Governance Initiative (GEGI),<\/span><\/a>\u00a0of which he is the Co-Director. Conor Gately (Earth and Environment) and Prof. Jonathan Levy (Environmental Health) discussed methods\u00a0to improve greenhouse gas emissions inventories and the public health benefits of clean energy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The third session on the human dimensions of sustainability was moderated by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/ioc\/\"><span class=\"s2\">Initiative on Cities<\/span><\/a> Executive Director Katharine Lusk and featured Prof. Cutler Cleveland (Earth and Environment), Prof. Henrik Selin (International Relations) and Prof. Anne Short (Earth and Environment). Topics included energy end use and energy transitions, efforts to reduce\u00a0hazardous substances,\u00a0and social and ecological aspects of sustainable development.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The final session of the conference focused on the future of sustainability. Pardee Center Director Anthony Janetos set the stage by explaining the importance of\u00a0prediction, adaptation, and risk management and tolerance. Prof. Les Kaufman (Biology), Prof. James McCann (History), and Prof. Madhu Dutta-Koehler (City Planning and Urban Affairs) followed with a wide-ranging discussion that explored the future of sustainability\u00a0for\u00a0marine ecosystems, urban areas, and the interface between human and natural systems.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The BU Conference on Sustainability Research was\u00a0co-sponsored by the\u00a0Pardee Center, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cas\/\"><span class=\"s2\">College of Arts and Sciences<\/span><\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/earth\/\"><span class=\"s2\">Department of Earth and Environment<\/span><\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardeeschool\/\"><span class=\"s2\">Pardee School of Global Studies<\/span><\/a>, and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/ise\/\"><span class=\"s2\">Institute for Sustainable Energy<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">An edited version of the full conference video will be available soon in the Pardee Center\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/pardee\/multimedia-library\/\"><span class=\"s2\">Multimedia Library<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Cheryl Stewart The Frederick S.
