Photo by Dan Aguirre for Boston University Photography.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Boston University students have big ideas \u2013 whether they\u2019re aiming to prevent cyber attacks or using GPS data to improve cattle herding. As good as their work is though, they don\u2019t always know the best way to present their research. Enter the\u00a0Center for Information &amp; Systems Engineering\u00a0(CISE) Graduate Student Workshop (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cise\/programs\/student-programs\/cgsw-2\/cgsw-2\/cise-graduate-student-workshop\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CGSW<\/a>), designed to give Ph.D. and Master\u2019s candidates a chance to present their work.<\/p>\n<p>Ph.D. students, Yasaman Khazaeni, Greg Castanon, and Jing Wang, initially came up with the idea for the event last semester and hoped it would give their classmates a chance to practice speaking in front of a large audience.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of the main issues we have as students becomes clear at conferences,\u201d said Khazaeni. \u201cWe\u2019ve done great research but don\u2019t present it well.\u201d Often times, she added, engineering students come from international backgrounds and don\u2019t have enough confidence to present in English. \u201cBy speaking in front of a friendly audience, as opposed to a conference where you\u2019d know few people in the audience, your classmates and professors can offer feedback and really help you smooth out your final presentation,\u201d said Khazaeni.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_35508\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-35508\" style=\"width: 318px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/cise\/files\/2014\/01\/CISE-organizers-450x300-2.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"308\" height=\"205\" class=\"wp-image-35508\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-35508\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ph.D. students, Jing Wang, Greg Castanon, and Yasaman Khazaeni (pictured from left to right), organized the CISE Graduate Student Workshop in hopes of giving their classmates a chance to practice speaking in front of a large audience. Photo by Dan Aguirre for Boston University Photography.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span>Khazaeni, who helped choose 14 students to present out of a pool of 23 applicants, said that the event also allowed CISE students to learn from classmates and discover more about the projects they\u2019ve been working on. Among those she learned from were Ph.D. students, Morteza Hashemi and Delaram Motamedvaziri, who took home the Best CISE Presenter awards.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Hashemi, who is advised by\u00a0<\/span><strong>Professor\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cise\/profile\/ari-trachtenberg\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ari Trachtenberg<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>(ECE, SE)<span>, spoke about his project, Coded Data Sharing in Intra-Car Wireless Sensor Networks. He has been working with Trachtenberg,\u00a0<\/span><strong>Professor \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cise\/profile\/david-starobinski\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">David Starobinski<\/a><\/strong>(ECE, SE)<span>, Ph.D. student, Wei Si, and General Motors Research to determine if using wireless sensor networks (WSN) might allow for a greener way to construct tomorrow\u2019s vehicles. The work\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/ece\/2013\/05\/21\/more-reliable-vehicle\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">previously won<\/a><span>\u00a0the Center for Reliable Information Systems and Cybersecurity Award as well as the Provost\u2019s Award at Scholars Day last year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Advised by<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>Professor\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cise\/profile\/venkatesh-saligrama\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Venkatesh Saligrama<\/a><\/strong>(ECE, SE), Motamedvaziri spoke about her work, \u201cPoisson Statistics and the Future of Internet Marketing.\u201d \u201cThe effectiveness of search engine marketing is dropping while the power of social media marketing is rising,\u201d she explained. \u201cMathematics would suggest that social media is now the better advertising strategy.\u201d She said that though her research focused on total hits advertisements received, she\u2019d like to expand her work in the future by looking at data concerning how long a person stayed on a website. \u201cUltimately, we\u2019re more interested in seeing transactions occur as opposed to clicks,\u201d said Motamedvaziri.<\/p>\n<p>Also honored at a reception at the BU Castle following the presentations were Setareh Ariafar, the Most Attentive CISE Student, and<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>Professor\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cise\/profile\/david-castanon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">David Casta\u00f1\u00f3n<\/a><\/strong>(ECE, SE), awarded for his contributions to CISE. Because 20 students attended all fourteen presentations, the most attentive of them was chosen by raffle.<\/p>\n<p>In case any students left the workshop having doubts about their speaking skills,<span>\u00a0<\/span><strong>Professor\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cise\/profile\/christos-cassandras\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Christos Cassandras<\/a><\/strong>(ECE, SE)<span>\u00a0<\/span>closed the day by offering some advice, including \u201cnever overestimate the intelligence of your audience\u201d and \u201cthe maximum pieces of information that should appear on a slide is two.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGiving a good talk is a difficult thing,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s as much of an art as a science.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Boston University students have big ideas \u2013 whether they\u2019re aiming to prevent cyber attacks or using GPS data to improve cattle herding.
