We show that, in a suitable asymptotic regime where the population size goes to infinity, the dynamics of the SIR and SEIR processes can be described exactly by a tractable finite system of ODEs. Furthermore, we demonstrated how the ODE characterization can be used to analyze the outbreak size under both constant and time-varying recovery rates.\u00a0 We also demonstrate via simulations the efficacy of the ODE description for populations of moderate size, and remark on generalizations.
