Hariri Institute of Computing and Computational Science &amp; Engineering federation of centers and initiatives.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Our Mission<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span>The mission of CISE is to deepen and broaden interdisciplinary research in the study and design of intelligent systems with broad societal applications. <\/span><span>In today\u2019s increasingly data-driven, networked world, we have an unprecedented opportunity to monitor, control, and improve our well-being and surroundings. By engineering hardware and software systems to acquire, analyze, and act upon information from a range of networked sources, we can advance human intelligence to solve critical problems in fields such as health care, communications, energy, and national security, among others.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>CISE activities<\/strong> are designed to catalyze and support cross-disciplinary faculty research collaborations, advance scientific understanding and discovery, facilitate engagement with industry, and support a diverse community of faculty and students. In conjunction with this core mission, CISE spearheads a number of activities to project the College of Engineering\u2019s and BU\u2019s strength in information and systems engineering, both internally within BU, and externally.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Our Community of Innovators<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The CISE community includes 56 distinguished faculty members and more than 100 graduate students, as well as invited postdoctoral researchers and visiting scholars from 12 different departments, divisions and academic\u00a0 units across Boston University, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the College of Engineering (Electrical &amp; Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, the Division of Systems Engineering, and the Division of Material Science and Engineering);<\/li>\n<li>the College of Arts and Sciences (Departments of Computer Science, Earth and Environment, Mathematics and Statistics);<\/li>\n<li>the Questrom School of Business (Departments of Finance, Information Systems, and Operations Management); and<\/li>\n<li>the Faculty of Computing &amp; Data Sciences, an int<span>erdisciplinary academic unit unifying computing and data sciences research and education programs<\/span>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Additionally, many CISE research projects engage with faculty and students affiliated with Boston University School of Medicine and the Boston Medical Center.<\/p>\n<p><span>The Center is<\/span>\u00a0led by the CISE Director, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cise\/profile\/ayse-kivilcim-coskun\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ayse Coskun<\/a>, and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cise\/about-cise\/management-committee\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Management Committee<\/a> of eight senior faculty (including the director). CISE was established in 2001 with five founding faculty (Professors <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cise\/profile\/john-baillieul\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">John Baillieul<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cise\/profile\/michael-caramanis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Michael Caramanis<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cise\/profile\/christos-cassandras\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Christos Cassandras<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cise\/profile\/david-castanon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span>David Casta\u00f1\u00f3n<\/span><\/a>, and <a
