Professor Venkatesh Saligrama Named 2021 IEEE Distinguished Lecturer

Every year, the IEEE Signal Processing Society’s Distinguished Lecturer Program selects five authors and educators to serve as ambassadors for the program; those selected will give international lectures. Electrical and Computer Engineering Professor Venkatesh Saligrama is climbing the ranks of this premier professional organization, and has been selected as a 2021-22 IEEE SPS Distinguished Lecturer.

Saligrama’s research focuses on machine learning, with an emphasis on zero- and limited-shot learning, statistical testing of graphs, resource-efficient learning and a broader focus on Artificial Intelligence’s societal impact. Saligrama joins his ECE colleagues Janusz Konrad and Vivek Goyal who have also served as distinguished lecturers in this program.

Saligrama is an IEEE Fellow for contributing to structured detection and estimation theory. He has been a Chair of the Special Interest Group on Big-Data for SPS society, and served on the awards board for Information Theory society. He has served as the associate editor for IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing, IEEE transactions on Information Theory, and as an Area Chair for several premier ML conferences including ICML, NeuRIPS and COLT. He has earned several awards, including best paper awards, and national awards, such as a National Science Foundation CAREER Award, a  Presidential Early Career Award and the Office of Naval Research Young Investigator Award. Saligrama has also been the featured speaker at several conferences such as the 2015 Machine Learning for Signal Processing, 2009 Homeland Security Summit, the 2006 Northeast Control Conference.
