BU Student Marisol Barcelata Wins 2023 Inclusive Short Film Competition
The CIMS co-sponsored “Inclusive Short Film Competition: Film for All, Film for Everyone” awarded its first-place prize to 3rd-year Sociology student Marisol Barcelata.
Barcelata’s short film, Haciendo Un Hogar (Making a Home), draws on her own experiences of trying to find home throughout her life and how immigrants face unique challenges in their “journey of creating homes for themselves here in the United States.”
The film follows three immigrants and reveals a portion of each of their stories of creating homes after immigrating to the United States. Barcelata writes, “In the film, we are able to hear about their experiences while integrating into American society, as well as what home means to them.”
CIMS recently partnered with the Romance Studies Department’s annual Second-Language Learning & Disabilities Conference to host the “Inclusive Short Film Competition: Film for All, Film for Everyone.” The competition aimed to normalize the presence of disabilities in front of and behind the camera, to make sure that disabled people are accomodated in viewing the short film, and to celebrate diversity.
