The award is presented each year at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/commencement\/2011\/ccd.shtml\" target=\"_blank\">College of Arts and Sciences Class Day ceremony<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In announcing the award, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cas\/faculty-staff\/administration\/student-programs\/biography\/index.shtml\" target=\"_blank\">Dr. Steven Jarvi<\/a>, Associate Dean for Student Academic Life, stated that the theme that emerged from the comments of Professor Whitty&#8217;s advisees is his sincerity and genuine interest in the well being of his students.<\/p>\n<p>An international student commented that &#8220;he is from Europe, just like me, and he is interested in how my life is and how I\u2019m adapting to America.&#8221; Another student mentioned that Professor Whitty &#8220;is the most kind-hearted and caring professor that I had the fortune to have class with.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>This 2011 award is the fourth time in a row that it has been conferred on a member of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/chemistry\/people\/faculty\/\">Chemistry faculty<\/a>.  Previous winners have included, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/chemistry\/2008\/11\/01\/chemistry-faculty-receive-college-of-arts-and-sciences-top-teaching-and-advising-awards\/\">Sean Elliott<\/a> (2008, an inaugural awardee), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/chemistry\/2009\/05\/07\/john-snyder-receives-the-templeton-prize\/\">John Snyder<\/a> (2009), and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/chemistry\/2010\/05\/21\/caradonna-metcalf-award\/\">Binyomin Abrams<\/a> (2010).<\/p>\n<p>The Endowed Fund was established in 2008 with gifts from John and Josephine Templeton as a measure of their gratitude to the dedication shown by members of the Boston University faculty in the personal counseling, guidance, and advice they give to undergraduates.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Professor Adrian Whitty has received a Templeton Award for Excellence in Student Advising in recognition of his strong and demonstrated commitment to the personal and academic development of his students.
