{"id":7115,"date":"2010-09-22T13:33:26","date_gmt":"2010-09-22T17:33:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/chemistry\/?p=7115"},"modified":"2012-06-18T14:24:24","modified_gmt":"2012-06-18T18:24:24","slug":"icors201","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/chemistry\/2010\/09\/22\/icors201\/","title":{"rendered":"Over 700 People from 40 Countries Gather in Boston to Share the Latest in Raman Spectroscopy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-7118 alignright\" title=\"ICORS 2010 Laser Show\" src=\"\/chemistry\/files\/2010\/09\/DSC_4116-450x300.jpg\" alt=\"ICORS 2010 Laser Show\" width=\"270\" height=\"180\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/chemistry\/files\/2010\/09\/DSC_4116-450x300.jpg 450w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/chemistry\/files\/2010\/09\/DSC_4116.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 270px) 100vw, 270px\" \/><a href=\"\/chemistry\/people\/faculty\/ziegler\/\">Professor Larry Ziegler<\/a> (BU Chemistry and the BU Photonics Center) and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.physics.neu.edu\/champion.html\">Professor Paul Champion<\/a> (Northeastern Physics) co-organized the highly successful 22nd International Conference on Raman Spectroscopy (ICORS 2010 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.icors2010.org\/\">www.icors2010.org<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Held in Boston over five days, \u00a0(August 8 \u2013 13), the conference was attended by over 700 people from 40 countries. This biennial meeting has not been held in the US since 1996 (Pittsburgh).\u00a0 In the recent past ICORS has been hosted by different conference organizers in:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"singlespace\">\n<li>London (2008)<\/li>\n<li>Yokohama (2006)<\/li>\n<li>Gold Coast Australia (2004)<\/li>\n<li>Budapest (2002)<\/li>\n<li>Beijing (2000).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The meeting featured plenary, invited, and contributed lectures, as well as poster presentations dedicated on the light scattering phenomenon know as Raman scattering.\u00a0 To learn about Raman scattering, <a href=\"\/chemistry\/research\/about-ramen-scattering\/\">click here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div><!--more--><\/div>\n<p>The social program included a BBQ dinner at Fenway Park, a dinner cruise of Boston harbor and the Conference Banquet. The Conference Banquet, held in the ornate, Boston Park Plaza Imperial Ballroom, was a particularly exciting event featuring an after-dinner speech by Nobel Laureate <a href=\"http:\/\/www.physics.berkeley.edu\/research\/faculty\/townes.html\">Professor Charles Townes<\/a> (UC Berkeley) entitled &#8220;Birth of the Laser and Now.&#8221; Professor Townes won the Nobel Prize in 1964 for his role in the \u201cinvention\u201d of the laser.\u00a0 His talk was following by laser light show that impressed all, including the Nobel laureate!<\/p>\n<p>Partial sponsorship was provided by the BU <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/photonics\/\">Photonics Center<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cas\/\">College of Arts and Sciences<\/a>, and the Departments of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/chemistry\/\">Chemistry<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/physics.bu.edu\/\">Physics<\/a>.
