{"id":14656,"date":"2015-05-21T14:57:49","date_gmt":"2015-05-21T18:57:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/chemistry\/?p=14656"},"modified":"2015-05-21T16:52:01","modified_gmt":"2015-05-21T20:52:01","slug":"interdisciplinary-course-grants","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/chemistry\/2015\/05\/21\/interdisciplinary-course-grants\/","title":{"rendered":"Interdisciplinary, Integrated Course Ideas Receive Provost Grants"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Chemistry faculty, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/chemistry\/people\/faculty\/snyder\/\">John Snyder<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/chemistry\/people\/faculty\/abrams\/\">Binyomin Abrams<\/a><\/strong>, in conjunction with colleagues in the Departments of Biology (<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/people.bu.edu\/kspilios\/Dr._Kathryn_Spilios\/Boston_University,_Biology.htmlhttp:\/\/\">Kathryn Spilios<\/a> <\/strong>and <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/biology\/people\/faculty\/celenza\/\">John \u201cChip\u201d Celenza<\/a><\/strong>) and Neuroscience (<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/academics\/cas\/departments\/neuroscience\/\">Paul Lipton and Lucia Pastorino<\/a><\/strong>) have successfully proposed ideas to develop integrated, inquiry-based laboratory courses for first and second year biology, chemistry, and neuroscience students.\u00a0\u00a0 Jointly funded by the Office of the Provost, the Center for Excellence &amp; Innovation in Teaching, and the College of Arts and Sciences, these interdisciplinary course development grants aim to promote faculty and student collaboration across disciplines in support of innovative, research-oriented undergraduate laboratory education.\u00a0\u00a0 The new courses that are being developed, Integrated Science Experience 1 (ISE 1) (for second semester freshmen) and ISE 2 (for first semester sophomores), will facilitate students making connections across biology, chemistry, and neuroscience early in their undergraduate careers. Such interdisciplinary insights will better prepare for advanced courses and undergraduate research.
