In the past decade, our teams and our student-athletes have enjoyed an extraordinary run of success, and we have opened new facilities that energized our programs and revitalized the campus and the city.<\/p>\n<p>This very moment, Athletics is preparing for a series of changes that will carry us to new heights for decades to come.<\/p>\n<h2>Moving into a New League<\/h2>\n<p>In the 2013\u201314 academic year, BU joined the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.patriotleague.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Patriot League<\/a>, an NCAA Division I conference with a strong commitment to academic excellence and athletic competitiveness. The Patriot League and its member institutions\u2014Colgate, Holy Cross, Lehigh, Lafayette, Bucknell, Navy, Army, Loyola of Maryland, and American University\u2014share Boston University\u2019s long-standing emphasis on the ideal of the <a href=\"\/changingthegame\/why-give-ath\/backing-student-athletes\/\">student athlete<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Building New Balance Field<\/h2>\n<p>BU recently opened <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bu.edu\/today\/2013\/the-games-begin-on-new-balance-field\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New Balance Field on Babcock Street<\/a>, across from Nickerson Field. This $24 million facility has seating for one thousand, an underground parking garage, and an adjacent small park. Supported with a generous grant from the Boston-based athletic shoe and apparel company New Balance, the field has transformed the University\u2019s West Campus and provided a much-needed playing field for varsity and club sports, as well as intramural and recreational programs.<\/p>\n<h2>Sponsoring New Varsity Sports<\/h2>\n<p>In the spring of 2014, Boston University fielded its first-ever <a href=\"http:\/\/espn.go.com\/boston\/story\/_\/id\/7579629\/boston-university-terriers-men-lacrosse-going-division-i\">varsity men\u2019s lacrosse<\/a> team. Led by Ryan Polley, a two-time Division II coach of the year and former Yale assistant coach, the team competes in the Patriot League, one of the NCAA\u2019s strongest lacrosse conferences. The University is committed to building a program that in a very short time will compete for national championships in what is the fastest growing sport in the United States. This follows the 2012 addition of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.goterriers.com\/sports\/w-crew\/spec-rel\/021412aaa.html\">women&#8217;s varsity lightweight rowing<\/a>, led by Coach Malcolm Doldron.<\/p>\n<h2>Our Future\u2014With You<\/h2>\n<p>At Boston University, we build on a rich history of athletics and a record of successful strategic investment. This history has led us to the changes described above.
