Whether students are studying in London or New England, faculty prioritize out-of-the-classroom learning experiences that allow students to make connections across their courses.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So when CGS students were able to return to the six-week London semester in summer 2022, they were given projects and assignments based on real-world applications and various cultural experiences. For students in Team F, a \u201cStoryMap\u201d project encouraged them to describe key takeaways from different London geographical sites visited during the semester, while using digital media to tell a story about their London experience.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Assignment<\/span><\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_33988\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-33988\" style=\"width: 184px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/cgs\/files\/2017\/12\/regan-headshot_003-224x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"174\" height=\"233\" class=\" wp-image-33988\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cgs\/files\/2017\/12\/regan-headshot_003-224x300.jpg 224w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cgs\/files\/2017\/12\/regan-headshot_003-768x1030.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cgs\/files\/2017\/12\/regan-headshot_003-764x1024.jpg 764w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 174px) 100vw, 174px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-33988\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Master Lecturer of Rhetoric John Regan<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the StoryMap project, students applied their thoughts on certain historical sites, performances, and London landmarks visited by answering set questions from their Team F professors. Then, using a virtual program discovered by Rhetoric Master Lecturer John Regan, students aligned their responses to the landmarks on an actual map.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before each trip, students were given a few questions to think about, so that they could be prepared to approach the final assignment, according to Associate Professor of Rhetoric, Aaron Worth. The assignment also asked students to\u00a0 reflect on England&#8217;s history as the center of a vast global empire of English-speaking nations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some of the sites the team visited were Brighton, Oxford University, Shakespeare\u2019s Globe, the Imperial War Museum, White Chapel, Night at the Opera, and the Royal Pavilion. While students did not write responses on all of the trips, the trips all acted as a representation of British culture and history.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe went on different trips and activities, but how did they all connect? What are some ways to deepen the experience?\u201d said Regan. He stated that \u201cthis was a move towards creating some unified thing,\u201d when it came to linking all of the team\u2019s London trips.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Reading List<\/span><\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_46422\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-46422\" style=\"width: 552px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/cgs\/files\/2022\/12\/Screen-Shot-2022-12-15-at-2.58.34-PM-542x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"542\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-46422\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cgs\/files\/2022\/12\/Screen-Shot-2022-12-15-at-2.58.34-PM-542x300.png 542w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cgs\/files\/2022\/12\/Screen-Shot-2022-12-15-at-2.58.34-PM-768x425.png 768w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cgs\/files\/2022\/12\/Screen-Shot-2022-12-15-at-2.58.34-PM-755x418.png 755w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cgs\/files\/2022\/12\/Screen-Shot-2022-12-15-at-2.58.34-PM.png 914w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 542px) 100vw, 542px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-46422\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kohana Bondurant\u2019s (\u201823, CAS \u201925) project title page labeled, \u201cMoving Across London.\u201d<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While most of the assignment was based on experiences, several readings from spring semester courses helped students prepare for the StoryMap project. Some readings included <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The War of the Worlds<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by H.G. Wells, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The First Men and the Moon <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">by H.G Wells, Shakespeare readings, as well as several short stories and poems on the Suffragette movement in England, women\u2019s participation in World War I, and analysis of various art pieces.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt helped on a level where you\u2019re able to make connections from what you\u2019re learning in class to why you\u2019re going on these excursions, and how it relates to the curriculum as a whole,\u201d said Kohana Bondurant (\u201823, CAS \u201825), who used various poems read in her classes to apply to her StoryMap project.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Learning Goals<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">RH 104 covers a Hub unit related to digital and multimedia expression. Students were asked to photograph their experiences at these trips and plot them on the map.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regan explained what he wanted students to apply from his rhetoric classes to the project.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI wanted to spend more time on shorter writing assignments, more frequent, but with the real attention to the sentence level\u2026there\u2019s a lot of moving parts you\u2019re trying get students to develop deeply, organize their essays on a global scale, and while I did give them sentence level instruction, coming over to London, I really foregrounded that.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students were given the opportunity to express their creativity by using an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/storymap.knightlab.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">online program<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by knightlab designed for creating StoryMaps. Not only were they able to hone their photography skills, but they were able to visualize and create their own map of England.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Approaching the Assignment<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Due to the creative nature of the assignment, students of Team F all had their own approach to it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Naomi Grusby (\u201823, Pardee \u201825), said her project was a \u201cgradual process,\u201d and that it was most helpful for her to write down her feelings and facts in bullet form right after each trip.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI really enjoyed the Julius Caesar Globe trip, just from a historical standpoint, I thought it was very interesting,\u201d said Grusby. \u201cYou don\u2019t often get to be in the place where something was meant originally to be performed, or being able to experience what we can interpret from what Shakespeare maybe intended for this play.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_46423\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-46423\" style=\"width: 543px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/cgs\/files\/2022\/12\/Screen-Shot-2022-12-15-at-2.58.39-PM-533x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"533\" height=\"300\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-46423\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cgs\/files\/2022\/12\/Screen-Shot-2022-12-15-at-2.58.39-PM-533x300.png 533w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cgs\/files\/2022\/12\/Screen-Shot-2022-12-15-at-2.58.39-PM-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cgs\/files\/2022\/12\/Screen-Shot-2022-12-15-at-2.58.39-PM-755x425.png 755w, https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cgs\/files\/2022\/12\/Screen-Shot-2022-12-15-at-2.58.39-PM.png 928w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 533px) 100vw, 533px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-46423\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kohana Bondurant\u2019s project slide on the performance of Julius Caesar at the Globe Theatre.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meanwhile, Bondurant found some trips easier to write about than others.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI prefer to be told a bunch of information rather than being told to \u2018go explore\u2019 because I like storytelling, so when I was given the ability to further the storyline or ask my own questions, those were easier to write about,\u201d Bondurant stated.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Final Grades<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the end, Team F students created a virtual StoryMap with their own photographs of their chosen trips along with descriptions of their cultural perceptions and analysis. Students enjoyed the creative aspect of the project.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When it comes to the project, \u201cslow and steady wins the race,\u201d said Grusby. She said the project taught her time management and how to write in a casual academic tone.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe importance of learning things as you go, recording experiences as you go, like a digital diary, that was very useful for me, because I realized after the fact that there are so many little details that I forget so easily,\u201d Grusby said. \u201cAnd you think that you\u2019re gonna remember them in the moment, but in reality you might not.
