\u201cIf you don\u2019t have it figured out, the essay will help you,\u201d Christy Wampole, an associate professor of French Literature and Thought at Princeton University,<\/span> told students during her Self-Edification Through the Essay lecture on Jan. 30.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Wampole spoke to a crowd of first-year College of General Studies students about the essay as a form of self-discovery and self-expression. She began by discussing the various definitions of the word essay.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s really important to understand this term because it gets muddled in contemporary language,\u201d Wampole said.<\/span><\/p>\n

She then launched into the discussion of self-edification by talking about authors whose books take a deeper look into the idea of improving morally, citing Roxane Gay\u2019s <\/span>Bad Feminist <\/span><\/i>as an example of attempting to understand multiple meanings of the concept of feminism through writing.<\/span><\/p>\n

She was an active presenter, engaging with the audience by asking them questions and showing a video essay, Chlo\u00e9 Galibert-La\u00een\u00e9\u2019s \u201c<\/span>Watching<\/span><\/i> The Pain of Others<\/span><\/i>.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

At the end, she described her current work called <\/span>American Time Capsule<\/span><\/i>, which she says was inspired by the movie <\/span>Boyhood,<\/span><\/i> directed by <\/span>Richard Linklater. Her book will place over 12 years and be comprised of essays she writes one month of each year about social and political developments that month.<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhat I am trying to do with my essays is trying to connect the dots between myself and the political and social world,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Students said they enjoyed Wampole\u2019s energy and her perspective on the essay.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI really enjoyed how she was so passionate about the topic and I feel like this will help me in the future,\u201d said Bianca Chao (CGS\u201921 COM\u201923).<\/span><\/p>\n
