But are these probiotics doing what they are supposed to be doing? Professor <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cgs\/faculty\/natural-sciences-and-mathematics-faculty-profiles\/sandy-buerger\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sandra Buerger<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a lecturer in natural science and mathematics at the College of General Studies,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and Alexander Smith (CGS\u201919) wanted to find out if these probiotics were the real deal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With a grant from the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/cgs\/about\/citl\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Center for Interdisciplinary Teaching &amp; Learning<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Buerger and Smith went to the drugstore and got samples of different probiotics. After going back to the lab, Buerger and Smith ran their experiment by putting the pill&#8217;s diluted bacterial powder onto petri dishes. Buerger also decided to test the probiotics against naturally fermented foods like miso soup and apple-cider vinegar. \u00a0According to Buerger, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe numbers from our methods have been a little lower than what\u2019s claimed on the box, but there are definitely living bacteria&#8221; in the probiotic pills.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/research\/articles\/do-probiotics-work\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BU Research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the next step for Buerger is finding out whether all those bacteria actually make it through the digestive system to the small intestine. To do this, Buerger and Smith plan on building an artificial stomach that will actually be able to digest the probiotics. After a few hours, Buerger says that she will check, \u201cAre they still alive? Are there more of them ready to grow?
